Today, the issue of how should children spend their spare time attracts more and more patents’ attention. Some of them believe that their children should lay a solid foundation of knowledge in this rapidly changing world. It’s no deny that the accumulation of knowledge, as prerequisites and necessities for survival in this competitive world, is conducive to their higher education and future career. To keep up with the Joneses, children should make the best use of their study time when they are young.
However, the parents who don’t allow their children enough time for leisure activities are misguided. Such activities are far from being a waste of time. It’s important to remember that children need comprehensive development other than intellectual one, and the best way to achieve this is through activities such as travels, sports and games. If they don’t go anywhere during their holidays, how can they broaden their horizons? How can they develop their physical coordination or learn important social lessons about winning and losing if they don’t practise any sports? Many children form strong interpersonal skills through playing games with other kids, and without the opportunity to do this, they may grow up into immature adults.
Finally, I think it’s important to emphasize that children need to relax as well as study. If everything they do must have some educational relevance, they may soon get tired of study, which is the worst thing that parents wouldn’t want.
