Project: Design Development for Luxury Designer Brand

Project Brief

This project is intended to build upon the knowledge gained in semester one and to further develop your research, design and contextual skills and your understanding of how to design for a global high fashion luxury brand.

Most Luxury brands design multiple seasonal collections that are shown to international buyers and press on different platforms such as runway shows, Internet launches, showroom presentations or all of the above. These collections are then sold to the public in stores and online around the world throughout the year.

The research that goes into designing a luxury brand collection is intense and uses a cross section of tools and inspiration. Designers research often include an artist or an art movement, an architect or a famous person or music movement reflecting what is happening in the world today or in the past. A particular country or culture and or its history can be an inspiration for a designer’s research. Many other forms of inspiration influence can inspire a designer.

Brand Research

Based on your Dries Van Noten brand research in semester 1, you are required to develop  pre-fall 2025 either or both menswear and/or womenswear collection. Makes sure to review your group research and expand your understanding of the brand through further research and analysis of brand identity and its latest collections. Compile your findings focusing on following elements:

Brand

Identity/DNA

Research the designer, its history and philosophy. (min 1 page)

Collection Analysis

Silhouette

Analyse key silhouettes. Look at variations in length, volume, and proportions. (min 1 page)

Shape, Line &

Construction

Pay attention to shapes, direction, and flow of lines as well as types of cuts used in sleeves, necklines, hems, collar, and various garment parts.

Examine the seams, edges, and overall construction of garments and how they are constructed. (min 1 page)

Colour

Observe the predominant colours used in the collections. (min 1 page)

Fabric

Look at the fabrics used in different garments. Take note of the textures and materials. (min 1 page)

Details

Closely examine the details on garments including

surface decorations such as prints, embroidery, appliqué, or embellishments, and finish details. (min 1 page)

Your understanding and knowledge of the brand should be reflected in your trend research and design development.

Trend Research

This designer and his brand are synonymous with bold colour choices and colour combinations, bold graphic print combinations with rich embellishment and exotic fabric choices. He experiments with architectural draping and pattern cutting, unu DESN1171 Design Development for Luxury Designer BrandJava sual layering and proportions, all under a multi-ethnic umbrella.

Develop concept and colour palette for pre-fall 2025 appropriate for this brand and your chosen gender.

1. Research Trend

Use sources such as magazines/journals in the library, appropriate websites, trend forecasting reports and research 1 trend from  a range of sources. Collect inspirational images and develop a mood board with a colour palette dictated by your chosen trend. Explore fabrics and fashion designs which may have used this trend.

2. Compile Your Research Finding

The trend should consist of a maximum of 4 digital pages (A3). Compile your research findings using a white background. The trend should be accompanied by following elements:

- A mood board

- A colour palette

- Examples of fabrics dictated by the trend

- Clear descriptions about the concept of the trend and written analysis of the examples demonstrating your critical understanding of social, cultural, and global influences on fashion context.

You must use the Harvard Referencing System to reference all your sources including text and images.

Once bound, these sheets will become your Future Trends Journal. Hand in your Research Journal as a PDF file.

Design Development

Design your collection for pre-fall 2025 that you feel is closely related and reflects the Dries

Van Noten brand. Using the photographic imagery, colour, fabric, print, pattern and trim ideas you have researched, design a minimum of 25 designs. This must be presented with flat

sketches (both front and back) and 4 finished Illustrations of outfits along with your design development journals. You must insure you have a clear design path to follow that

demonstrates and includes detail, silhouette, shape, texture. Please be aware of that all designs are your own original and completely new and you cannot include any design

submitted for this and other modules.

Presentation should be professional on A3 boards. Overall presentation is an important part of the design process and brief. Use your skills that you learnt in semester 1 to generate a clear, concise, impactful presentation. Please consider proportion when flat sketching and insure all of your sketches are in proportion to one another.

1. Establish Your Silhouette

It is important to decide on the silhouette and proportion of your collection before you start designing individual pieces. Make sure the silhouette is appropriate for your chosen customer and market level you do not want to alienate your core customer. You can mix silhouette ideas together but ensure you are still conveying a strong message. Present your idea on one silhouette board (A3)

2. Develop a Range Plan

A range plan is an overview of your collection with your designs & financial parameters set out and it outlines the specific of your collection. Present a range plan board to indicate the garment categories (product type) and total number of garments in each category.

3. Develop/Collect Fabric/Material

Source a range of fabrics and trims suitable for your chosen trend; use only what the trend tells you is suitable. You will also need to consider your range plan, market level, season, and silhouette. Place your swatches on one A3 sheet and use only these fabrics and trims for your designs.

Textile development & fabric manipulation will strength your originality of your collection. Use techniques you learn from textiles & digital fashion modules.

Your fabrics will need to be scanned into your Design Development digitally. Full fabric compositions must be given and an indication of what they can offer in the design development process (i.e. this fabric has elastane so is suitable for a fitted garment, this fabric has draping qualities so is suitable for a fuller, looser shape etc).

4. Design Development

Based on your chosen trend, range plan and silhouettes, start the design development using the various hand/digital tools to provide a minimum of 25 design ideas. Design development should be presented as flat drawings (both front & back of garments). These flat drawings must be worked using white A3 layout paper and should demonstrate  where the idea originated, remember that your design development must be originated/developed from your trend. Include colour, texture, seam details and fabric. This will need  to  be scanned in digitally to your Design Development Journal.

5. Choose the Final Outfits

Based on design development, illustrate 4 outfits on figures using hand/digital tools of your choice. These illustrations should  present  all details in each design with styling and be coloured on one A3 Sheet. This finished sheet should be thoughtfully and  professionally presented
