写IB EE(Extended Essay)时容易犯的五大错误

EE的重要性无需多言,EE和TOK一共占IB45分总分的3分,其中一门拿到E的话,就会fail,拿不到IB的diploma。虽说和学校老师会有meeting讨论的机会,但时间有限,提供的精准指导也有限。EE的要求很严谨,很多同学第一次进行正经的学术写作,难免会踩这样那样的坑。

【第一大忌】Research Question定得太宽泛!

同学们在写EE的时候定题、定research question非常重要,可谓好的topic和rq是成功的一半。好的rq一定得满足这几个条件:

1. 是你真正感兴趣的,否则你写EE的这几个月会痛苦死!

2.  不过于宽泛以至于被资料和信息压垮,也不过于狭窄以至于没有资料无从下笔。大多数同学比较容易把rq定得太宽,一方面我们根本无法在4000字内把这种宽泛宏大的问题研究透彻,另外一方面在查找资料时容易头晕眼花,overwhelmed by information。我们对比以下两个rq:

What is the history of Chinese theatre?VSHow does the legacy of Mei Lan Fang contribute to modern Jingju?

哪一个更清晰、更有重点呢?是不是一目了然!

【第二大忌】Table of Contents和Research Question写得毫无关系!

绝大多数学生EE的质量不用看正文,老师们翻一翻目录心里就有数了。有的同学选择了立意和scope非常好的research question,结果一看目录,body part的章节跟rq可谓除了几个关键词相同外没有半毛钱关系,展开得非常随意,完全没有奔着分析和回答rq去,这种EE就别想着拿A或者B了,拿到C都是谢天谢地!

【第三大忌】 Introduction或Conclusion写得太长!

很多同学一开始会觉得EE需要写4000字实在是一件痛苦至极的事情,但写着写着大家往往会发现——写得精炼简洁比写得多更难。因为不知道什么时候该刹车、不知道什么信息重要什么信息不重要,特别是有的同学总觉得intro部分要把所有文中涉及的概念通通加以详细阐述,哪怕是一些特别basic的概念,导致简介和总结一不小心就洋洋洒洒写了四五页纸,还不忍心删除。宝,EE一共最多就4000字,你一头一尾就占了一两千字,正文还能写点啥?

【第四大忌】生硬拼凑sources!

如何利用好sources是一个很讲究尺度的东西。首先我们需要明确一点,我们是利用资料来回答我们的rq,而不是通过东搬西凑各类articles最后组成一个缝合怪,这种行为我们称之为plagiarism。

【第五大忌】排版过于随意!

EE的排版相对是比较固定的:字体选择times new roman或者Arial或者Calibri,size 12,double spacing;此外title page、目录页怎么排版,in-text citation和bibliography使用什么引用格式等都有规定,一定要注意统一!如果使用了MLA格式,那就stick to it,千万不要一会MLA一会chicago,或者一会double spacing一会single,不用看内容光排版就让人头晕~
