翻译思路拆解 | 为什么中国观众爱看“乘风破浪的姐姐”？

今天推一篇英译中思路拆解。

第一段

Mango TV Shines on Unconventional Reality Show

芒果TV真人秀节目不落窠臼，大放异彩

Mango TV这个词一看就知道是一个电视台名称，但中文要怎么表达？芒果电视？芒果卫视？芒果电视台？这种专有名词只能去人家官网上查证，不可自己乱编：

unconventional /ˌʌnkənˈvenʃənl/ 表示“ 非常规的，不落俗套的（very different from the way people usually behave, think, dress etc）”

之前我们在翻译群中提到过形容词的分句译法，简单来说，就是将一些形容词提取出来，当成一个小小小句子来处理，这样会让整个译文结构看上去清爽一些，最经典的例子莫过于雪莱的这个句子：

An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying king

如果翻译成：一位衰老的、疯狂的、瞎眼的、被人蔑视的、垂死的君王，就很奇怪。

可以用分译的思路，把每个形容词都拆出来，成一个四字格或者其他什么小句子：

老态龙钟，脾气暴躁，老眼昏花，遭人唾弃，奄奄一息。

此句中也是一样，unconventional，如果去修饰“真人秀”，不同寻常的真人秀节目，放在标题中会有点杂乱，看不出重点。因此可以尝试将unconventional单独拎出来，处理成动词，和shine一起处理：

标新立异，大放异彩。

reality /riˈæləti/ 作名词，表示“真实; 现实（what actually happens or is true, not what is imagined or thought）”

TV is used as an escape from reality .电视成了逃避现实的一种方式。

harsh / grim / stark reality

Millions of people live with the harsh realities of unemployment.数百万人生活在失业的残酷现实中。

the reality is that

The reality is that young people will not go into teaching until salaries are higher.实际情况是，只有薪水上涨年轻人才会去当教师。

标题中的Reality Show即我们常说的“真人秀”

第二段

Last Friday, Mango TV, the online video platform affiliated with Hunan Broadcasting System, launched the reality talent show whose Chinese name translates to “Sisters Who Brave Winds and Waves.” The first episode has received 400 million views so far and sparked a rally for shares of Mango Excellent Media Co. Ltd., operator of Mango TV.

上周五，湖南广电旗下互联网视频平台芒果TV推出真人秀节目《乘风破浪的姐姐》。截至目前，第一集累计播放量已突破4亿，带动芒果TV运营主体芒果超媒的股价飙涨。

我们先看第一句：

Last Friday, Mango TV, the online video platform affiliated with Hunan Broadcasting System, launched the reality talent show whose Chinese name translates to “Sisters Who Brave Winds and Waves.”

芒果TV后面有个同位语，信息量并不是很大。之前我们提到同位语要怎么处理来着？信息比较简短的、介绍类的同位语，可以直接并列，比如此处：

为什么affiliated会想到“旗下”，而不是“隶属”？“隶属”也没有错，不过对于这种介绍类的信息，我们完全可以通过平行文本保护好自己一头飘逸的秀发，不用从头到尾每个词都自己想译文：

这是人家芒果TV官网上钦定的解释，错不了。

affiliate /əˈfɪlieɪt/ 作动词，表示“（使）附属（隶属）（if a group or organization affiliates to or with another larger one, it forms a close connection with it）”

whose Chinese name translates to，这句话需要逐词翻译吗？“中文名翻译为……”？需要这样吗？

我们要明确，这篇文章介绍的主体事物是中国的节目，我们大家都很熟悉。外媒是把这个节目介绍给不了解情况的外国读者看的，所以用了translate一词。但对于中国读者来说，这档节目的名称还有谁不知道的吗？需要说“翻译”吗？中文节目名难道不是一推出的时候就已经设计好了的吗？何来“翻译”一说？

因此此处直接说：一档名为……的真人秀节目，即可。

“乘风破浪的姐姐”，这个节目名称看到很多地方都拆解过了，这里就讲解几个词：

brave /breɪv/ 及物动词，表示“勇敢地面对（to deal with a difficult, dangerous, or unpleasant situation）”

brave the elements / weather etc 不顾天气恶劣

More than 100 people braved the elements and attended the rally. 有一百多人不顾天气恶劣参加了集会。

值得一提的是，关于这个节目名的翻译，在2020.6.18的ChinaDaily文章Age should have more than 15 minutes of fame给出的翻译是“Sisters Riding the Winds and Breaking the Waves”，是真的在“乘”和“破”。

而文中的brave又多了一种“勇敢面对”的意味。两个版本大家可以参考。

我们在翻译实战中，公关公司给的案子经常涉及到国内各类节目的名称翻译。要怎么翻译呢？

依然是去找官方译名。只不过不同于刚才说的查官网，这种节目英文名最简便的查询办法是去找节目组的官宣海报。

海报上一般都会有节目的英文名，比如《向往的生活》，如果通过关键词搜索，很容易找偏，吃力不讨好。但如果我们在图片搜索中直接输入“向往的生活”，很快就能找到官宣海报，看到上面的译文是：Back to Field。

你看，如果你还吭哧吭哧地输入关键词：向往的生活 life，很难找啊，人家译名里压根就没有life一词，就不是贴着字面翻译的。

做翻译的，一定要懂得利用互联网，保护头皮。

再看第二句：

The first episode has received 400 million views so far and sparked a rally for shares of Mango Excellent Media Co. Ltd., operator of Mango TV.

先抠几个词：

episode /ˈepɪsəʊd/ 可数名词，表示“〔电视连续剧或广播连载节目中的〕一集（a television or radio programme that is one of a series of programmes in which the same story is continued each week）”

the first episode of a new drama series 新电视连续剧的第一集

rally /ˈræli/ 可数名词，表示“〔尤指股价〕止跌回升（an occasion when something, especially the value of shares, becomes stronger again after a period of weakness or defeat）”

意思都很好理解，要怎么说人话呢？

Receive … views，收到多少观看？很别扭。Receive不能照字面翻译，可以结合后面的时间状语so far，一起处理为“累计播放量”。

后半句的难点在于spark，这个词强调一个“爆发”，suddenly，瞬间带起来的，可以把这个瞬时势能放到rally这里来，合并处理为“带动……股价飙涨”。

同时注意operator，“运营商”更多指网络服务供应商，公司的operator更多可以是“运营主体”。如果不确定怎么办？找度娘，输入芒果TV、芒果超媒，会看到关于芒果超媒的财报新闻，用得比较频繁的词就是“运营主体”。

第三段

Music talent shows have been all the rage in China in recent years, but viewers are slowly getting tired of young hopefuls who largely fall into the same formula. In contrast, Mango TV’s new show is an outlier, featuring 30 established female celebrities aged 30 and above competing for a spot in the five-person winning group at the end.

近年来，音乐类综艺节目在中国火遍大江南北，但观众逐渐厌倦了那些千篇一律的年轻新星。而芒果TV的新节目不落俗套/另辟蹊径/不走寻常路，召集了30位“30+”知名女艺人参与角逐，最终将选出5人组团。

又遇见了rage，不过文中用的是它的一个固定搭配be all the rage，表示“流行，风靡一时（to be very popular or fashionable）”

DiCaprio became all the rage after starring in the film ‘Titanic’. 迪卡普里奥主演了电影《泰坦尼克号》之后迅速走红。

tired of (doing) sth 表示“对（做）某事感到厌烦（厌倦）的（bored with something, because it is no longer interesting, or has become annoying）”

I’m tired of watching television; let’s go for a walk. 我看电视都看腻了，我们出去走走吧。

hopeful /ˈhəʊpfl/ 作可数名词，表示“〔尤指在演艺、体育、政治等方面〕希望获得成功的人（someone who is hoping to be successful, especially in acting, sports, politics etc）”

Thousands of young hopefuls were auditioned for the role. 几千名雄心勃勃的年轻人参加了这一角色的试演。

formula /ˈfɔːmjələ/ 表示“准则; 方案（a method or set of principles that you use to solve a problem or to make sure that something is successful）”

看第二句：

In contrast, Mango TV’s new show is an outlier, featuring 30 established female celebrities aged 30 and above competing for a spot in the five-person winning group at the end.

Outlier这个词不查词典都能翻译得出来，in contrast就是和前一句“千篇一律”相对应，那就是“不走寻常路、不落俗套、另辟蹊径……”

feature 特点是……，这里和前面的spark, receive一样，都不能照字面处理，按照自己理解的来翻译。这里其实是说这30个30岁以上的小姐姐小阿姨是节目的特点，那这个特点在前半句就得到体现了，这里倒是不用再重复，反而不好组句，直接说“邀请的是谁”就好。

spot /spɒt/ 表示“〔在排序表、比赛中的〕位置; 名次（a position in a list of things or in a competition）”

Manchester United are still in the top spot after today’s win. 今天获胜后，曼联队继续位居榜首。

第四段

Apart from the female stars’ musical talent, Mango TV hopes to showcase their youthful attitudes in a world in which most female entertainers have a short “shelf life”. The new concept instantly grabbed the attention of Chinese viewers who anxiously awaited the show’s debut. The first episode aired last Friday after limited official publicity and received 10 million views within the first 20 minutes.

放眼娱乐圈，大多数女艺人的“保鲜期”十分短暂。芒果TV希望这个节目不仅能够展现女明星的音乐才能，还能展现她们的年轻心态。这个新概念立即引起了中国观众的关注，他们翘首以盼。尽管前期并无过多官宣预热，但第一集在上周五首播20分钟内便达到了1000万次播放量。

先看第一句：

Apart from the female stars’ musical talent, Mango TV hopes to showcase their youthful attitudes in a world in which most female entertainers have a short “shelf life”.

apart from 中文“除了…之外”，可以有两个意思，一个是“以…为例外”（“把…除外不算在内”），一个是“有了…，还加上（别的）”。英文的apart from也同样有这两个大不相同的意义：

Apart from her, we were all in agreement. 除了她一个人不同意，我们大家都一致同意。

There are other problems with that car apart from its cost. 这辆车不但价钱高，而且还有其他一些问题。

apart from前面如果有否定词nothing，可能有两个不同的意义。

一个是“除此没有别的”、“唯一只有”。

She has nothing apart from her good looks to get by in life. 她只能靠自己的美貌过日子。

另一个是“离开了…就什么也不是”（apart from仍然保持“离开”的意义）。

… good is nothing apart from truth, nor truth anything apart from good. (Emanuel Swedenborg and Isaiah Tansley, The Divine Providence, p. 14) …善离开了真，就什么也不是，同样，真离开了善，也就什么也不是。

shelf /ʃelf/ 本义是指“货架”，所以有个搭配off-the-shelf表示“现货供应”。

be (left) on the shelf可以表示“不被考虑，搁置不用”以及“〔尤指女子〕因年龄太大而嫁不出去”，是英式的一种老的用法。颇有点中文里的“剩女”的味道。

所以在文中的shelf life就可以理解为“有保质期的，有期限的”。

world可以表示某个职业的圈子，比如the world of fashion时装界，这里应该就是娱乐圈。

如果把in a world in which…定从放在句子里：“在这个大多数女艺人保鲜期都很短暂的娱乐圈里”，不太好组句。可以尝试把定从拆出来，同时作为背景信息，放到句首。

grab /ɡræb/ 作及物动词，本义表示“抓住，抓取”，搭配attention表示“吸引〔某人的注意〕（to get someone’s attention）”

The book is full of good ideas to grab your students’ attention. 这本书里通篇都是如何吸引学生注意力的好方法。

可以替换attract one’s attention的用法。

debut /ˈdeɪbjuː; ˈdebjuː/ 可数名词，表示“〔演员或运动员等的〕首次登台，初次亮相; 〔新事物的〕问世（the first public appearance of an entertainer, sports player etc or of something new and important）”

He made his Major League debut as shortstop. 他以游击手的身份在联合会职业棒球赛上首次亮相。

film / acting / directorial etc debut

His Broadway debut was ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’. 他首次在百老汇舞台上演出是在《红花侠》中。

在《经济学人》2019年11月的文章里也有出现过：

These concerns pose the biggest threats to a smooth stockmarket debut(expected to be by the trendy mechanism of a direct listing) in 2020 .

这些担忧构成了爱彼迎在2020年顺利上市的最大威胁预计它将选择时下流行的直接上市机制）。

air 作动词，表示“播放，广播（to broadcast a programme on television or radio）”

The program is due to air next month. 这个节目定于下月播出。

看下最后一句：

The first episode aired last Friday after limited official publicity and received 10 million views within the first 20 minutes.

这句前后句之间似乎有一个小转折，尽管没有太多官宣，但是还是取得了巨大的成功。翻译的时候可以把这个转折稍微提一提，这样句子读起来会更连贯自然。
