The GATT Server data is arranged in services with characteristics. The GATT protocol defines various
procedures for discovering, reading and writing, notifying and indicating characteristics. A GATT
Service runs on the Server to implement the GATT protocol. All Bluetooth Low Energy profiles are

based on GATT.

The GATT Server data is conceptually arranged into services, e.g. the Battery Service. The actual
data, such as the battery level or the battery state, is represented by characteristics of that service

The characteristics may be further described using characteristic descriptors, for example

The services, characteristics and descriptors are mapped on top of the Attribute Protocol table
structure. Individual services and characteristics are identified by UUIDs.

The GATT Server data mapped to the table of attributes shown in Figure 1-6 is referred to as the GATT
Database.
GATT defines procedures for a Client to:
■ Discover services, characteristics and descriptors

■ Write values of characteristics and descriptors
