  • Distinct user types: Based on website traffic and the behavior flow, there appears to be two distinct user types with two distinct content needs. The two user types are prospective parents/students and enrolled parents/students.

After examining the data from 2014–2017, we began the redesign process with clear goals in mind.

  1. Refine site structure: Consolidate site content and reduce text.

Although much of the website content can be relevant to both prospective and enrolled students/parents, an effort was made to determine which user type would primarily be interested in each page. Furthermore, content was consolidated or eliminated when appropriate.

This approach enabled us to reduce the size of the website by four pages with the goal of creating a more intuitive site structure.

When we developed the first redesign in 2014, there was a desire to share a lot of information and make the website appear robust. Long blocks of text may have been off-putting to visitors who are likely researching and evaluating several schools in one sitting.

Based on demographics data and page traffic, we were able to conclude that the majority of website visitors were prospective students/parents. Ideally, a prospective parent is using the website to learn about the school, determine if their child is eligible for admission, and they may even begin the application process by filling out the introductory questionnaire.

Using behavior flow metrics, we could see that it took three interactions before they filled out the introductory questionnaire. With each interaction, there is visitor drop-off.

In the 2014–2017 version of the website, the metrics indicate that only around 5% of visitors reach the Admissions page with enough information about the school to confidently determine if they wanted to fill out the introductory questionnaire form or not.

In the 2017 redesign, nearly 15% of visitors reach the admissions page with adequate information about the school.

Based on the 2014–2017 data, we hypothesized that users may have been having difficulty finding the introductory questionnaire form (it was housed within an accordion menu). Additionally, the form may have looked daunting because it was vertically long.

A one page form with 15 questions is less likely to be completed than a 3 page form with 5 questions per page.

Test automation can be thought of as "writing software to test other software”. Using one of the commercially available automated testing tools, test scripts are written that drive the application under test -- execute keyboard, mouse actions and background processing -- and verify application responses and behavior just as a human would. Automated testing can reduce or eliminate the drudgery and repetition associated with some manual tests, decrease the time required to test and make your tests more consistent and repeatable. Automation testing also increases the quality of the product and produces early fault tracking during the testing phase. Convergys Test Automation Team has developed an Advance Data Driven Testing (ADDT) approach by using the Test Automation Engine, which drives WinRunner based on the input provided by the tables. This technique is used to test our highly complex PC based Billing Application for the Client and also for Background testing. The approach has been successfully implemented in System Test Organization in Convergys for the regression and new features testing. In the last two years, it has been proven that Automation Testing can improve the reliability and the quality of our software products and reduce the man-hours needed. Automation testing also helps us to detect faults in earlier stages of software release cycles, which reduces the bug fixing cost dramatically. This technique is generic and can be used for any PC based Client/Server application or web application by modifying the Test Automation Engine.
