A Father's Prayer

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in vic­tory.

塑造我的孩子，主啊，让他足够坚强去认识到自己是软弱的，勇敢的面对自己的恐惧；使他坦然面对失败英勇不屈，使他在胜利面前温和而有德。

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee—and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

塑造我的孩子，使他不会以空想代替行动；他将知道你的存在 -- 并且知晓认识自己是知识的基石。

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

我请求主引领他，不走那安逸舒适的坦途，而是在困苦和压力的挑战下策马前行。使他学会在暴风雨中挺立，使他学会对失败的人怜悯。

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to mas­ter other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

塑造我的孩子，使他心灵清澈，志存高远，在他试图领导别人之前先能够领导自己，他能看清未来，但是也不会遗忘过去。

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet nev­er take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the sim­plicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.
