Bio Menace - Walkthrough

Welcome to the first ever FULL WALKTHROUGH to…

                              B I O - M E N A C E ! ! !

by the-micro-man…

About the game:

Bio-Menace is a 1993 MS-DOS game by Jim Norwood; published by Apogee.
It uses the game engine of the later Commander Keen games, Scubaventure,
and Dangerous Dave 2, 3, and 4. (Dangerous Dave 3 & 4, and Scubaventure were
released the very same year). It was also the last Apogee game ever to use EGA
graphics. It is pretty gory, so if the violence level of, say, DOOM, or something offends
you; you might not want to play this one.

System Requirements:

  • EGA Card or better

  • A PC Speaker or a Sound Card
(Use VDMSound to hear the SB effects on a Windows XP Computer)

  • MS-DOS 5.0 or better

Memory Problems:

There are several things you can do if your game suddenly stops due to lack
of memory:

  • If you are running on a DOS computer, rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files to AUTOEXEC.OLD and CONFIG.OLD. You can rename
them back to their previous names when you are done playing.

  • Turn off all sound in some stages if you are running on your Windows or DOS drive (C:).

  • On a Windows PC, your best bet is to run the game from an external hard drive.
I have been playing it on an external hard drive for the past few days, and have
    experienced absolutely no memory restrictions.

===Basic Overview===

Graphics (4/5):

While EGA Graphics on DOS computers were starting to become pretty outdated by
the end of 1993, this game was able to do quite well with just 16 colors. The eyes and
hair on characters are very realistic-looking, and some of the monsters are quite
creepy-looking; especially the ones from Volume 1. The scare-factor was toned down
a bit in Volume 2 (The mutants started looking more cartoonish), but the violence wasn’t.
Mutants explode into big bursts of gore when killed, and when you kill the robots,
explosions, fire, and shrapnel fly everywhere. Very exciting graphics.

Music (5/5):

The music in this game is absolutely wonderful. From the militant-sounding tune from
the very first level, to the techno theme of the Computer Core, to the
hip-hop-sounding tune used in the Guard Tower, to the hard-rockish music played
during the battle with Goliath, this game has some pretty good ear-candy to make even
the most annoying parts of the game enjoyable in some way.
(If you are running Windows XP, you need to install VDMSound to hear the music)

Sound Effects (3/5):

The sound effects are pretty average, a lot of clangs, buzzes, beeps, and growls.
They’re pretty fun to hear, though. The PC Speaker sounds aren’t that bad either.

Control (3/5):

It’s not perfect; Snake will usually continue to move for 1/4 of a second after
you press the arrow keys. But don’t worry, you’ll barely even notice.

Difficulty (3/5 - 5/5):

It all depends on the difficulty mode you select. Really, there isn’t actually that
much of a difference; I’d just go for easy mode, though. You’re not missing out
on anything by playing a harder mode, allof the exact same enemies and items
are there; you just have fewer maximum life bars

Replayability (5/5):

You’re probably going to want to play this one again once you’ve beaten it, it’s a
load of fun, and the experience is just great…

Overall: 4/5

The game isn’t perfect; there are a few problems and glitches, but keep in
mind that this was done by only one person (aside from the music), so it’s pretty
spectacular when you put it into that perspective. This was a time before people
had DVD drives or 3D Graphics cards, so if it fails to meet your expectations,
don’t play it. The Commander Keen engine was used, but they added in new features
like different weapons, stamina bars, and bosses. It never became as popular as
Commander Keen, Wolfenstein, or Duke Nukem to get a console port or even a sequel,
but it still sold fairly well. So, I think this is one of the best games ever made, but
then again; that’s just my opinion.

=== Enemies ===

Mutant Slug - Purple mutant slugs that crawl on the ground. Their main attack
is jumping towards you in an attempt you bite you.

Thug Mutant - These green humanoid mutants mostly engage in fist-combat,
as they like to punch their enemies. They also resemble Cosmo from
Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure…

Fire Demon - This horned demon-like creature has the ability to turn into a
blazing wave of fire to burn its enemies. Regular and super bullets cannon kill it
while it is on fire.

Robo-Rocket - A robotic bomb with legs that jumps and detonates toward you
when you draw close. It cannot be destroyed with regular or super bullets.

Lizard-Man - A large but intelligent dinosaur-like creature that weilds a
machine gun. He does not prefer to move.

Critter Mutant - This furry mutant is small, and his attacks consist of curling
into a ball and rolling on the ground, or jumping. Low-shots are effective against
him.

Mutant Snake - The mutant snake crawls on its belly and spits projectile
venom at you. A very annoying foe!

Radioactive Slime - The very slime that mutated these creatures has been
released onto Metro City to spread its toxic radiation on the citizens! It can’t
be killed by regular or super bullets. Bombs are effective to take it out.

Toxic Mutant - A massive, green, amphibious mutant with slimy skin. It spits
large globs of toxic sludge as an attack.

Energy Bubble - An energy mutant made of some sort of plasma; it can jump faster than it crawls.
It sorta reminds me of the Shikidai from Commander Keen!

Stalagtite Mutant - These creepy things resembling green multiple-eyed mosquitos that just
hang from the ceiling and drip toxic chemicals from their noses.

Robo-Turret - A robotic laser cannon that is mounted on the ground.

Helicopter - These vehichles fly in the air and drop Para-Bots to the ground.

Para-Bot - A tiny walking robot that falls to the ground with a parachute. How cute!

Bouncer - A robot that bounces around on the ground propelled by some red-plunger-looking
thingy.

Robo-Tank - A massive robotic tank that fires a whole arsenal of weapons, such as missiles,
bombs, torpedos. Make sure not to touch them; they kill on contact!

Master-Mind - These huge robots often guard bridges by creating force fields, they can’t be killed,
but they can be deactivated with keycards or shards.

Guard-Robot - A large robotic guard. Attack style is completely identical to that of
the Lizard-Man.

Sticky Mutant - A yorp-like mutant that has the ability to walk on the ceiling. It can
drop at will.

Killer Bee - Crazed mutant bees that live in the killer beehive; there are not many of them.

Mutant Caterpillar - A very basic enemy. All he does is hop around and open and close
his mouth. He doesn’t have much stamina either.

Bomb Mutant - Gray mutant apes that carry bombs. They never actually use them
though, unless they are touched by you. They are very fast.

Mutant Ant - The Mutant Ants live in large colonies and are the most intelligent of the mutants,
as they have built spears as weapons and apparently have advanced construction skills.

Urchin Mutant - A blue floating mutant spiked ball. Cannot be killed.

Mutant Nymph - These tiny mutant vermins are close followers of the Mutant Ant Queen.
They don’t take much ammo to kill.

Trash Carrier - This one is actually a bit cute. It’s a robot that brings garbage to the
trash dumps. While he can’t directly kill or hurt you, it does have the tendancy to push
you into dangerous situations.

Bomber-Bot - This huge-headed robot doesn’t move; it just dispenses an endless
supply of tiny little blue explosives.

Cyber Soldier - An android solder who carries a rile which shoots pink bullets at you.
They are very strong and very fast.

Shocker-Bot - These flying robots often attack in groups and they always move in a fixed
pattern. They will kill you on contact.

Plasma Man - These little gremlins are very quick and run in one direction until they hit a wall.
They cannot be killed with regular or super bullets.

=== Items ===

Machine Gun - Your basic ammo. Inflicts 1 unit of damage upon enemies with each shot.

Super Bullet - Inflicts 5 units of damage upon enemies.

Plasma Bullet - Inflicts 10 units of damage upon enemies. Cannot be rapid-fired unless
the “CAT” cheat is activated while this weapon is in use.

Green Grenade - Explodes when thrown.

Red Grenade - Explodes, then creates a moving trail of fire that spews smaller fireballs.

Land Mine - Explodes on contact with enemy. Is not thrown.

Gem - 50 of these will give you an extra life.

Medical Kit - Restores all of your health.

1-Up - They look like minature versions of Snake Logan. They give you one extra life.

Invincibility Potion - Makes you invincible for about 20 seconds.

Key - Unlocks most doors.

Special Key - Unlocks secret doors.

KeyCard - Deactivates some force-fields.

Computer Chip - Deactivates exit force-fields.

Blue Shard - Can be used to deactivate some force-fields.

Cyan Shard - Can be used to deactivate some force-fields.

Green Shard - Can be used to activate/deactivate some bridges.

Red Shard - Can be used to activate some elevators.

Secret Level Gem - If you get one of these, you will be taken to a secret bonus level
after the stage you found it in.

===VOLUME 1===

Story: You are Snake Logan, a CIA operative who likes to do things his own way. Metro City has
been under attack of some horrible mutants for awhile, and your job is to fly over the city in your
plane and report back what is happening. Martial Law has declared for all citizens to evacuate the
city. Intelligence reports that a man calling himself “Dr. Mangle” claims to be responsible for all of this.
A communication from Dr. Mangle states that Metro City is to be an example of the entire country
if all factions of the government do not comply to his wishes. Snake is given a file on Elmo Whitecliff,
a.k.a. Dr. Mangle. Apparently Elmo was once a scientist cooperating in a top-secret genetics
research firm called “Operation Bug Glow”. Their goal was to take ordinary insects and mutate them
to extraordinary size and intelligence. However, Dr. Mangle has added some very violent genes into
the mix, and he has sent these mutants to attack Metro City. Snake flies his plane over Metro City
to see what has happened, but suddenly, his plane is shot down, and he lands in the middle of the
city. Snake grabs his machine gun and heads out for a hopeless mission to rid the place of Dr. Mangle’s
terrible mutants…

Stage 1: Downtown Metro

Enemies: Mutant Slugs, Thug Mutants

Description: This is the very first destination in the whole game. After your plane has been
shot down, you end up in the middle of a terror-strucken Metro City (no, you’re not gonna see
a bunch of prissy-dressing straight men here); filled with mutants and dead civilians all around.
As in nearly every level, the goal of the stage is to rescue the hostage, and then find the exit to the next stage.

Basic Walkthrough: Okay, so you’re at the far-left of the stage with your crashed plane;
grab some bombs and the machine gun, and climb up the ladder. Grab the key on the ledge.
There is a super bullet pack at the top of this building, but you need to activate the elevator
to get to it. The activation switch is on the outside of the 4th floor of the second building.
Take it; it’s the strongest regular bullet in the game (There are three types). Now just jump
off the building (don’t worry, falling from large heights doesn’t kill you). Shoot the army of
Mutant Slugs, and climb up the ladder to the second building. Grab the keys and gems,
and walk into the first broken window. You’ll find a bunch of bonus items inside each door,
but each door requires a key to open. The hostage is on the second floor, but you have to obtain
the blue shard to free him. The blue shard is in the top floor. Now, once you’ve found it, go
back to the hostage room, and insert the blue shard into its place; the force field will deactivate,
and you can rescue the hostage. He will give you a computer chip. Now exit the building and
go to the third building (On the far-right); and insert the chip into its place. The force field
guarding the exit will turn off and you can head to the next stage.

Secrets: On the top floor of the 2nd building, walk through the wall to the far-left and jump
through frequently. You will find a bunch of gems and a pack of plasma bullets.

Stage 2: High Rise

Enemies: Fire Demons, Robo-Rockets, Lizard-Men

Description: Continuing from the first stage, now you fight your way up a construction site,
and you’re going to be fighting some new foes in this stage!

Basic Walkthrough: So you begin continuing from the previous stage in a fence-like area
guarding the rest of the tower. Jump while underneath the “keep out” sign, there’s a free
machine gun behind it. Grab the items ahead, and you’ll run into the first Fire Demon. Be
sure not to waste grenade bombs and automatic bullets, though! When the Fire Demon is
set aflame, he is invincible; you have to wait until he returns to his demon form. If you go
past the elevator ahead, you’ll see a Robo-Rocket. Don’t try to shoot it. Either blast it with a
grenade or dodge it when it jumps. If you are not killed, you can get a gem and a key. Now
go back and proceed up the elevator. Now kill the Fire Demon, get the items, climb the ladder,
and ride the second elevator. Hop onto the ledge with the Lizard-Man (to the left). Behind
him is a pack of plasma bullets. After this, be sure to check around the rest of the area
and get the items (gems, keys, grenades, guns) before climbing the ladder. When you
climb up, watch out for Fire Demons, ladder-climbers are an easy target for passing Fire Demons.
If you’re growing low on stamina, there’s a medical kit and some keys to your right. Now head to the left.
More Fire Demons and Robo-Rockets… you should know how to handle them by now. Climb up the
next ladder. Then go to the right and ride the elevator. Then you climb another ladder. Then
get Robo-Buddy and climb the next (But watch out for the Robo-Rocket waiting above). Now
head to the far-left of the tower, and activate the beacon. Now you may restart at that point if
you are killed. There’s also a medical kit. Now climb the ladder above. Then the next. Also
keep in mind that you need to make sure that you open each door; later on (especially) im
portant items will be stored in doors. As you climb the next; beware of fire coming from the
Lizard-Man nearby. Make sure you have a keycard by this point. If you don’t, unlock more
doors. Now you’ll see the hostage. Deactivate the force field with the keycard and set him free.
He’ll give you a computer chip, and you can go to the next level!

Stage 3: City Park

Enemies: Mutant Slugs, Critter Mutants, Mutant Snakes, Thug Mutants

Description: This stage introduces two MORE enemies plus the two enemies from the
first stage. It takes place in a forest-like park, so tree-climbing is the main aspect of
this level. Whatever you do, make sure to get to the treetops before you reach the
far-right of the map!

Basic Walkthrough: Now you’re in the park. When you start, some green
Thug Mutants will be coming towards you, so you’ll have to stay alert and blast
them to smithereens! Now look for a tree branch low enough for you to climb on to!
Now you’ll be jumping across tree branches, but be careful! The two new enemies
in this stage like to use low-down attacks, so you’ll need to crouch-shoot to kill
them, but jumping is required to avoid their attacks. Do your usual thing, and keep on
the lookout for beacons, gems, guns and bullets, grenades and mines, and other
things. Once you get to the end, you’ll be at a brick wall. If you followed my advice and
stayed at the top, you’ll see the hostage inside. She’ll give you the computer chip.
Now jump off, but stay next to the wall and keep facing right, because lower down
in the wall is the exit. Insert the keycard and you’ll be in the next stage in no time!

Secrets: Behind the very top of the first tree is a Secret Level Gem! If you get it, you
can visit a secret bonus level after you’ve completed the stage!

Stage 4: South Side

Enemies: Robo-Rockets, Critter Mutants, Radioactive Slime, Fire Demons

Description: You’re back in the city now; but in a more urban area; and even more
damage appears to have been done.

Basic Walkthrough: You start underneath a building. Get the key, jump over the trash can,
and wait for the elevator. Go inside the first floor of the building for the green shard and some
bonus items. Now go out and you can choose to go to the next next floor if you catch the
elevator. The second floor also contains bonus items, but it also has a sign with the code
listed below. The third floor of this building has the switches and gate which must be activated
using the code. Like all other color-coded switches in the game; if you enter the code
incorrectly, you will be killed. If you get it right or decide not to bother with it, go back
outside. At the top of the building are 3 keys. Now jump off or just leave and head to the second one.
Eventually, you should see a staircase. Climb atop the trash can nearby to reach it.
When you get there, watch out for the Radioactive Slime. They cannot be killed by bullets, but
you can take them out with plasma shots or any type of bomb. Climb the ladder up, get the key,
kill the Fire Demon, unlock the door, jump over the pit, avoid/kill the Robo-Rocket, get the key, and
then climb the next ladder. Kill the Slime, and get the items. The keycard is on this floor. Now
climb up the next ladder. Insert the green shard into the outlet for it. A large concrete block will fall
to the ground. Push it, and continue to push it until it falls into into the spiked pit. Use it as a platform
to get across. After you cross, you’ll see that above you there are two high rows of concrete
blocks. To make them fall and clear the way up, bump them with your head and then move out of the way!
When there is enough space, climb the ladder, and take all of the items and powerups
on the roof. Now go back down the ladder, and go back the
way you came (travel left, climb down ladder, climb down ladder), and then jump into the pit.
Insert the keycard into its slot and the hostage will give you his computer chip. Now, jump down,
go back up the stairs, travel left, climb up the ladder, climb up the ladder, travel right and
go across the spiked pit, and now you must travel down a ladder-filled pit, collecting some bonus
items as you climb down it. At the very bottom is the exit.

Color Switch Code: Red, Magenta, Blue, Green, Cyan

Secrets: On the second floor of the first building (far-right), when you first go inside
(your door should be underneath the colored bars), walk through the wall to your left. There is a mine
and a pack of plasma bullets hidden inside.

Stage 5: Sewer

Enemies: Radioactive Slime, Toxic Mutants, Mutant Snakes

Description: To get to Dr. Mangle’s secret lab, we’re gonna be trekking underground
for the next few levels. This stage is filled with water, fire traps, and slime-themed
enemies, so keep your guard on and don’t forget to plant some land mines!

Basic Walkthrough: You’ll start on the streets next to a stone wall and a pit leading
to the sewer. Hop in, and make sure to stay to the right side of the pit; there’s a machine
gun in there. Now you’re in the sewer water. Almost immediately, you should be ambushed
by a massive Toxic Mutant! Just shoot it a few times, and it’ll die, but watch out for the
toxic slime it spits at you. If you keep going further, you’ll see a ladder. It leads to the
surface again, with some gems and a medical kit guarded by three Mutant Snakes.
Now go back down and keep traveling to the right; later on there’s another ladder
leading up, with even more helpful items. Now climb back down and travel right.
You’ll have to jump out of the water and then climb down a ladder into another
corridor, but this time, without the water. Now it’s filled with fire traps! The same two
enemies are down here (Toxic Mutants and Slimes), so shoot them as you go, and unlock doors
as you go, too! When you see a ladder leading down, climb it. Then repeat the stuff you did on
the first floor. The blue shard is somewhere on this floor. Climb down the next ladder. Travel
to the far-left of the tunnel. Open the red door, and you’ll see the hostage. Rescue him,
and as usual, you get the computer chip. Now go back to the tunnel, travel to the far-right, and
you’re onto the next stage! Good luck, it gets creepier after this part!

Stage 6: Cave

Enemies: Energy Bubbles, Toxic Mutants, Radioactive Slime, Stalagtite Mutants

Description: A continuation of the journey deep underground. This stage takes place
in a tunnel/quarry-like area; the evidence near the bottom of the cave leads me to believe
that Dr. Mangle may have been using this as some sort of top-secret storage area.

Basic Walkthrough: Travel right, and destroy monsters that get in your way.
Climb down the ladder. You’ll see the hostage, but she’s blocked off by a force field. You need
to find the cyan shard to deactivate it. Climb up the ladder in the center of the section,
and after you’re finished fighting off Energy Bubbles and collection bonus items, climb to the top
of the ladder and head to the left. Walk across the spiked rotater and deactivate the bridge switch.
Then go back, climb down the ladder, head to the left, and climb down the next ladder.
Head to the right. At the far-right of the room, there’s a ledge with a door guarded by a single spike.
There is a keycard in the door. Now, jump down, and head to the left again. Climb down the next ladder.
Now you are in a very wide-open space filled with boxes and bins.
Among some crates and toxic-waste barrels is a beacon. Now, after blowing away
some pesky monsters, look for a rocky bridge hanging from the ceiling. The cyan shard is inside
one of the doors on it. Now go back up two floors. Use the cyan shard to deactivate the force-field,
and–WHAT A SURPRISE– she gives you a computer chip.
Return to the bottom floor of the cave, use the computer chip, and head on the next level!
You’re halfway there!

Color Switch Code: Blue, Cyan, Green, Magenta, Red

Stage 7: Skull Man

Enemies: Skull Man

Description: Finally! The first Boss Stage in the whole game! Skull Man has to be one
of the most grotesque-looking boss characters ever put in an early 90’s video game;
he’s huge, he’s creepy, he’s gory, and he wants your skull! Despite this, I personally have no idea
how he connects to the plot; is he supposed to be working for Dr. Mangle, or is he just some
giant creep that Snake Logan just happened to stumble by? The questions to this day remain
unanswered.

Fighting Skull Man: So when you start the stage, you’ll be in the cave area.
Suspense builds up, as you walk by, you see dead bodies, skulls, and even a sign reading
“Skull Man was Here”. So eventually, he tell you how he will kill you, and then you jump up
out of the hole to fight him! Make sure you turn on the elevator, and then constantly shoot at
his head and his hands. His hands will fly off of his wrists and try to slice you, so you need to
shoot them to keep them off you. His head is the best target by far for you to hit. When
you’ve killed him, he just sits there on his throne with his head and hands replaced with
bloody stumps and wounds. Talk about violent! Anyways, you get a blue shard, and you can
deactivate the force field to the next stage. Good luck, ‘cause we’re going back up!

Stage 8: Elevator

Enemies: Robo-Rockets, Lizard-Men, Robo-Turrets, Thug Mutants

Description: It’s time for the final showdown to begin! The first step is to get to Dr. Mangle’s Laboratory,
so in this stage, we’re going to get back to the surface and go find it! There is no hostage in this stage.

Basic Walkthrough: You start at the far-left of the pit, with an underground lake and a
giant skull to your right. There’s also an elevator with a switch. Climb the elevator and go up,
but watch out for the Robotic Plasma Cannon at the top, so keep a good lookout! Wait for the next
elevator to the right to be within reach, and then jump on to it! At the top you’ll find a stone platform
with a Robo-Rocket and some grenades. Walk to the right side and wait for the next elevator. Jump off
and into the first crevice to the far-right. There’s a Robo-Turret and 3 gems. Jump off and into the next.
A Lizard-Man and some more items. Into the next: a green shard. Take it, activate the switch,
and wait for the next elevator to come down. Go back to the one to your left once you can reach it,
but this time, wait until it reaches the top. You’ll be at another rock platform, but this time; it holds
some gems and a platform switch. Wait for the next elevator to come within reach. Travel to the left.
Hop onto the next elevator. And then the next one. Now you should be next to a ladder on a ledge.
Climb this ladder and jump onto an inactive elevator. Press the switch and you’ll be taken to a
tower-like climbing area with a beacon. Just continue to climb up the ladder, while avoiding/destroying monsters,
until you reach the top; collecting items on the way. When you get to the top, your way
to the surface is blocked off by a bridge. Jump to the ledge on your right side. Insert the
green shard into its slot, and the way out will be opened. Now you walk out on a totally destroyed
city filled with flames and rubble, as a war between man and machine rages on in the background.
The exit is to the right. Keep your wits about you, because shrapnel is gonna fly in the next stage!

Secrets:

  • At the beginning of the stage, jump into the lake and try to land about 1/2 an inch to the
right of the glowing skull mask. You should land on a solid platform and get an item; but
quickly jump to the next and repeat, because they sink after about 1 second!

  • There is an alternate exit to the stage that does not require the green shard. At the second rock platform,
cross the elevators, climb the ladder, but then jump onto the falling rock blocks to your right.
Jump across the blocks, make sure you don’t fall, and climb the ladder at the end. You’ll go
up a similar tower-like tunnel, and you don’t even need the shard to get out!

Stage 9: No Man’s Land

Enemies: Helicopters, Para-Bots, Bouncers, Robo-Tanks

Description: No maze, no puzzle, no mystery to this one– this stage is pure fighting.
It’s a battlefield filled with all sorts of different battle-robots, and they’re all wanting to do you in!
Get rid of ‘em, rescue the hostage, and get inside that laboratory!!

Basic Walkthrough: Get the two machine guns, and head to the right. Activate the elevator, don’t
stop to pick up the machine guns beneath you, the elevator won’t go back down. Now that you’re in the air,
gun down the Helicopter to prevent the attacking of Para-Bots. When you’ve destroyed the Helicopter, return to the ground.
Fight off the Para-Bots and Bouncers. You should notice pretty soon a barrage of missiles and bullets
coming your way. Get atop the toxic waste barrel, and you should see the first Robo-Tank. Just shoot
and bomb it. DO NOT TOUCH IT! Robo-Tanks can kill on contact, so be careful around them.
You’ll see plenty more of them later on. Continue your journey to the right and activate the beacon.
You’ll see another elevator. Ride it up and wait for TWO Helicopters. Destroy both of them, and then
go back down. Walk onwards, until you find a toxic waste barrel and a medical kit. Stand atop it,
you’ll be facing the next Robo-Tank. Destroy it and walk on. Turn on the elevator. Don’t be too
quick to save the hostage and return to the ground, though. There is one more Helicopter lingering
on if you wait for it. When it’s destroyed, you can save the hostage. He gives you a computer chip,
and you can now enter Dr. Mangle’s Lab! Good luck.

Secrets:

  • At the beginning of the stage, head to the left; behind the entrance gate are a
green grenade, a red grenade, and a land mine.

  • In the crevice where the hostage is standing, jump up (through the cieling). You’ll get
    the Secret Level Gem.

Stage 10: Lab Entrance

Enemies: Robo-Rockets, Fire Demons, Energy Bubbles, Robo-Turrets

Description: This is the first section of the laboratory. It’s very big, so if you have memory
problems with your PC, be sure to turn off all sound options on the game while playing this stage.

Basic Walkthrough: This is another corridor-like stage, so you start the stage walking through the hall,
killing mutants and getting items as you go. Climb the first ladder to get to the second floor.
You’ll see the hostage. You’ll need the cyan shard to rescue her;
but don’t fret– it’s on this very floor! When you save her, she’ll give you a computer card.
Sounds like we’re done, right? Well, we’re only 1/3 through the stage! Anyways, after you’ve saved her,
head to the left and climb the ladder. Just continue all of this stuff. Repeat the pattern: Walk through hall,
kill monsters, collect items, climb ladder, repeat. On the top floor, you’ll be greeted by a
holographic version of Dr. Mangle surrounded by those familiar lion statues (Gargoyles?).
Anyways, he tells you about how his monsters are going to kill you and eat you and
he and some “Master Cain” guy are going to rule the world. After you’ve read the message,
deactivate the exit force field and go to the next stage.

Stage 11: Computer Core

Enemies: Robo-Turrets, Bouncers, Master-Minds, Robo-Tanks

Description: This stage is filled with more robotic enemies. It’s a bit complex, but you can
do it! Dr. Mangle is at the very next stage! Oh, and watch out for the flying sparks!

Basic Walkthrough: You start the stage almost immediately a victim of your surroundings,
with the Robo-Tanks and electricity-generating machines. Climb the ladder above you,
cross the ledge, jump over the pit and don’t get shocked, and then climb the next ladder.
In this room you’ll need to avoid the shots coming from the Robo-Turret, so shoot it. Behind
it is a pack of super bullets. Climb the ladder, destroy the Robo-Turret and the Bouncer,
and then activate the beacon. Now head to the right, and into the hallway. The hall is
guarded by a ton of angry robots, such as Robo-Turrets, Bouncers, and Robo-Tanks.
Take them out, and keep going. Turn on the switch and take the elevator down. In this
room you should be able to find the red shard. Go back through that hall, and climb the
ladder up. Somewhere in this hall is the cyan shard. When you find it, go back down,
and out of the hallway. Use the shard to activate the elevator. The elevator will take
you to a room with a blue shard inside one of its doors. Now go back down all of the
ladders until you see the first Master-Mind. Deactivate it by inserting the blue shard
into the slot. Now you can jump onto the Master-Mind’s chest as a “bridge” across
to the next area. The first two things on this are a Robo-Buddy, a door, and a Robo-Turret.
Now travel across the bridges. The keycard should be somewhere in this area.
Deactivate the second Master-Mind. Activate the beacon, and then jump off the bridges.
Travel to the right and destroy the Robo-Tanks. You’ll see the hostage guarded by a force field.
Deactivate it, and she’ll give you a computer card. Now, you’ll have to run all the way
back to the far-left of the stage. Go all the way back to beyond the second Master-Mind.
Now, with the computer card, you can access the exit. And now… the shocking conclusion
to the first volume!

Color Switch Code: Cyan, Blue, Red, Magenta, Green

Secrets:

  • There is a pack of plasma bullets hidden behind the entrance gate

  • The Secret Level Gem in this stage is a bit risky to get. Go past the first Master-Mind
(on the suspended bridge) and continue to walk right until you see the second spark-generator.
You might have to risk a few lives trying to get it, but it’s inbetween the spike pointing north
and the spike pointing west. If you can slip between this two without getting killed, you’ll have
    the gem.

Stage 12: Mangle’s Last Stand

Enemies: Mutant Dr. Mangle

Description: This is the final stage if volume 1, and the second boss battle.

Fighting Dr. Mangle: You’ll be walking down a staircase, and continue to run to the right until
you see Dr. Mangle. After he gives you his second little message, he mutants into a large monster
resembling a cross between a rhino/stegosaurus that breaths fire. Dodge the fire balls and just
continue to shoot and bomb it. When you start running low on health, take the elevator up to the
suspended bridge. The “Secret Key” is on this bridge. Take it and the other items on it, and then
jump off. Insert the key into the “Secret Door” (yeah, some secret…), and you’ll be taken to a
suspended platform hanging right above the monster, giving you the opprotunity to through
grenades at him from above. Anyways, when you kill the monster, it de-mutates back into a
severely wounded Dr. Mangle, and then the game cuts to the ending… but don’t worry, the
adventure is actually just beginning…

Color Switch Code: Red, Magenta, Blue, Green, Cyan

Ending:

Dr. Mangle is lying on the floor bleeding and coughing. He reveals to Snake Logan how he
was forced to create these evil mutants by Master Cain, who promised him great
wealth and power, and also threatened to kill him. Dr. Mangle tells Snake to seek
out Master Cain and defeat him, before he takes over the world! Dr. Mangle dies.
Snake then takes the airplane out of Dr. Mangle’s lab and detonates it in a large
mushroom cloud. A day after telling the CIA about this, Master Cain broadcasts a message
nationwide that he is going to unleash his full wrath on Metro City in 48 hours. But first…
Snake must destroy the source of these horrible creatures. Will he find and destroy the secret lab
before Master Cain begins his armageddon? We’ll find out in Volume 2… the outcome is up to YOU.

===VOLUME 2===

Story: Searching satellite photo after satellite photo, Snake continues to spend hours searching for
the hidden lab… Suddenly, Snake receives a mysterious fax from an alaskan agent, stating
“This has got to be it!”. The fax showed a photograph of some strange foot prints heading into the
forest. Snake takes a helicopter to the location and parachutes down into the dark forest below…

Stage 1: Outer Woods

Enemies: Mutant Slugs, Guard Robots

Description: This begins the journey into Dr. Mangle’s secret lab. This dark forest surrounds
the laboratory; there are creatures all about. Keep your guard on; but don’t worry,
this is a really short stage!

Basic Walkthrough: As I said before, this is a very short level. If you’ve been playing
all of the previous stages, this is just a cake walk. Kill the slugs. Get the gems.
Push the concrete block as far as you can. Get on top of the block and crouch
and shoot the Guard Robot. Get the blue shard. Open the stone gate.
Climb the ladder, and go to the next stage. No secrets. No puzzles. No trick. No nothin’.

Stage 2: Main Corridor

Enemies: Mutant Slugs, Sticky Mutants, Killer Bees, Stalagtite Mutants, Mutant Snakes

Description: This is the entrance to Dr. Mangle’s secret lab. There are tons of doors
and traps in this stage, so it’s a bit confusing, but you can do it!

Basic Walkthrough: You start at the entrance gate at the far-left of the hall.
Walk through, and watch out for the Sticky Mutants on the way; they can drop on you
at will. Use bombs or just try to dodge. You’ll also see Slugs and Stalagtite Mutants.
Climb up the ladder and unlock the door. Jump onto the next platform, and then the
next. Open the doors, one of them contains a blue shard. Now climb down the ladder.
Continue to walk to the right, and walk up the staircase. You’ll see two keys and a red door.
Go inside it. Now head to the left. There are two doors, but you don’t have the keys.
Continue to the left, and you should see them. Now open the silver and red door. But don’t go
inside the red one yet. Keep going left for some items and keys; until you get to the dead end.
Now go into the red door. You’ll be in another corridor; head left. Now go and get the
items and kill the mutants. You’ll eventually see a pit; but first, activate the bridge switch.
Now go down the pit. Enter the red door. You’ll see the hostage blocked off by a force field; use
the blue shard to deactivate it. She will give you the computer chip, and then you can exit.
Climb the ladders across the acid pit and jump from each one to the other. Deactivate the
force field with the computer chip and go to the exit.

Color Switch Code: Blue, Cyan, Green, Magenta, Red

Secrets: When you activate the bridge switch, head back to the right and you’ll see there’s a
staircase where the silver bridge used to be. Go down it, walk through the hallway, and then
walk through the wall and jump. You’ll find a medical kit and a Secret Level Gem.

Stage 3: Ant Caves

Enemies: Info-Bot, Mutant Ants, Urchin Mutants

Description: This is the first section of the mutant ant hill. The main enemies in this
stage are Mutant Ants. This is also the first stage to feature the Info-Bot.

Basic Walkthrough: The stage starts with you riding down an elevator. Now run to the right.
You’ll see a Mutant Ant as you walk up the hill. Now go across the flat ground, but don’t get
hit by the Urchin Mutants. Now walk down the hill and then jump off the ledge that ends it.
Kill the Mutant Ant and climb down the ladder your right. Unlock the doors for the items. Now
climb back up. Head to the left and climb the ladder. Dodge the Urchins and kill the Ants.
Eventually you’ll get to the spiked rotater; there are some keys on there. Now head to the right
and go back down. Walk down the slope to your left. Jump up on the ledge, and go inside the hole.
It’ll take you to a room with a single door. The red shard is inside it. Now go back out of the hole.
Get the keys, and jump off the ledge. Then go right, and down the ladder. Unlock the door to your left,
then go to the row of doors to your right. The one to the right of the beacon contains the keycard.
Now don’t go any further, yet. Go back left, and then down the ladder some more. Unlock the
door to your left and walk across the spiked rotater. There is a medical kit in the center.
When you finish, DON’T WALK THROUGH THE HOLE. It’ll take you all the way back to the first hole.
Jump down onto the stair-like path, kill the Ant, and activate the beacon.
Now go down to the bottom step. There is NOT a step after the ledge. Wait for the crystal platforms to appear.
Jump on them. When the next set appear, jump on them before the set that you’re currently
standing on disappears. Keep doing this until you see the ledge with the Info-Bot. Talk to it and it
will give you the Color Switch Code. Now walk into the hole. You will be taken to a ledge
in the middle of nowhere. Wait for the crystal platforms to appear, and then walk
across them to the other side of the pit. You’ll see some doors and a switch.
Press both to deactivate the bridge and activate the elevator. Hop on the elevator and you
can go back up to the stone steps. Now walk to the left and then jump up to the ledge on your left.
NOW go into the hole. You’ll be taken back to the stone platform. Go right, and off the platform, and up the hill.
Ignore the ladder you see. Now activate the elevator with the red shard. Start running left.
You’ll see the Urchin Mutants again; avoid them! Eventually you’ll get to a large stone staircase.
Jump down the pit, but stay to the right. You’ll see the hostage.
Insert the keycard and deactivate the force field. Now rescue him.
He will tell you that to destroy this lab, go look for a nuclear bomb with red glowing slots.
After he gives you the computer chip, go down into the pit. You’ll be back at the spiked rotater.
Head right, until you’re at the ladder; climb down it. Now head to the left. Now climb down the ladder.
Go the the tunnel with your already-opened doors to the right. Now go all the way. You’ll end up in a trap
with a sinking large stone block with spikes. The only way to escape it alive is to enter in the switch code
that the Info-Bot gave you. Then you insert the computer chip into its slot and you can exit the stage.
Why don’t you get a glass of water?

Color Switch Code: Cyan, Red, Magenta, Green Blue

Stage 4: Ant Town

Enemies: Mutant Ants, Mutant Slugs

Description: A continuation of your venture through the Mutant Ant Hill. I find this stage
really creative and interesting. It’s a little town made of logs and such by and for the Mutant Ants.
Sorta like the Ewok Village from Star Wars… Also, there are no doors or keys in this stage! WHOOHOO!

Basic Walkthrough: You start this stage on the edge of a cliff.
To your left are two cement blocks. Stand on the second one as it falls, until
you find an appropriate place to jump off (you want to get to the ladder).
Jump to the next one. You should see an inactive elevator. Stand on it and activate it.
You’ll have to jump across some more cement blocks, until you have to
jump up to a log platform. Walk right and try not to hit the spike on the edge when
you jump off. Kill the Mutant Ant. Then, you’ll have to jump across some more
wooden log platforms, in an almost zig-zag-like fashion, until you get to the ladder.
Climb up it. Go to the ledge on the right. Kill the Ant. There’s a ladder above you,
which leads to a medical kit. Once you’ve gotten it, go back down, and continue traveling left.
You’ll eventually have to jump off the ledge and onto a spiked rotater. After you’ve crossed it,
go up the wooden staircase. You’ll stop at a pit filled with bloody spears.
There is an inactive elevator, you need to jump onto the elevator and turn it on.
There’ll be several crevices in the area, none of them contain any particularly necessary items.
Jump to the top-right ledge and activate the beacon. Continue to travel right. Climb up the ladder.
Go inside the house to the right and get the invincibility potion. Now climb down, drop
down to the ledge to your right, jump up to the next ledge, and then onto the ledge with the
razor-spike guarding; you won’t be hurt since you are invincible. Ignore the first ladder you see,
continue right, and climb up the second ladder. Head to the lower wooden ledge on your left.
Drop down into the pit and get the green shard. Turn on the elevator and go back up.
Head to the right; and then jump on the wooden ledge on top of the one you’re
currently on. Climb up the ladder. Head to the left. Use the green shard to create a
bridge across the pit. Activate the beacon, continue left, and then down into the pit.
Go save the hostage trapped in the ant house. He gives you… A COMPUTER CHIP!
Now, you’re wondering how to get back. Walk through the wall to the right; you will drop
through a pit and land on a wooden ledge. Now wait for the elevator, and you’ll be back at the first
beacon. Use the previous steps on how to get back to the top of the ant town. Now, this time;
don’t head left (toward the bridge); go right. Deactivate the force field and continue right.
Kill the slugs and run to the exit.

Secrets:

  • At the beginning of the stage, walk through the wall behind you. There is a pack of
plasma bullets and a red grenade inside.

  • At the beginning of the stage, jump off the cliff and land on the tiny platform at the bottom of the cave.
The Secret Level Gem is on the platform to the left.

Stage 5: The Queen

Enemies: Mutant Ant Queen, Mutant Nymphs

Description: Third boss fight. You fight the queen of all Mutant Ants… the MUTANT ANT QUEEN!

Fighting the Mutant Ant Queen: The Mutant Ant Queen has wings
and can fly around the room. She does not directly attack you, but instead,
she discharges her Mutant Nymphs at you. They can be a bit annoying,
but they are very weak. Once you have killed her, you will get a key. Use it to
unlock a door at the bottom of the cave containing a keycard. Insert it and exit the stage.

Stage 6: Trash Dump

Enemies: Robo-Turrets, Bouncers, Garbage Carriers

Description: Sheesh, we’re getting to see every single nook and cranny of this place!
What’s next; Mutant Snake exhibit? Dr. Mangle’s office? Excrement Filter???!! Anyways,
this level is big and may need the sound off to conserve memory; but it DOES have a
very catchy background music.

Basic Walkthrough: You start the stage at the… FAR LEFT. Wow! What variety! Anyways,
walk right. Atop the toxic waste barrels is a Robo-Turret and and a Bouncer. Shoot them and
continue to the right. Then you’ll face another Bouncer and a Garbage Carrier. Just keep going right.
Eventually, you’ll find an elevator. Take it up to the next floor (You can’t go back down after this).
You’ll be in a fenced hallway. To your right are some keys. Get them and then venture left.
Climb the ladder. There are plenty of items and a beacon on this next floor.
After getting all of the items, head left. At the end of the hall is a ladder hanging
over a pit of acid. You can either climb the ladder or wait for the next elevator to come down.
You can collect grenades and the invincibility potion while on the elevator.
Anyhow, go to the next floor up. Destroy the robots for bonus points and get the key.
You’ll see some cement blocks and bonus gems over a pit of acid on the far-right of the room,
but it’s not really worth it. Go back left and return to the ladder or elevator. Go to the next floor up.
Fight the robots and get the items. At the end of the hall, you’ll see a force field.
You’ll need the cyan shard to turn it off. So go back up the ladder to the next floor.
You’ll be ammounted by some Robo-Turrets, so destroy them. Continue right.
The door next to the large cement block contains the cyan shard. Go back to the floor
below and deactivate the force-field. Open the door and you’ll find a green shard.
Now go back to the floor above. Use the green shard to deactivate the bridge… Now, climb
down the stairs and you’ll find the hostage, who is none other than… COMMANDER KEEN!
Boy, does this game ever get better? The dialouge in this part is just classic,
with Commander Keen getting annoyed with Snake who is calling him “Captain Keen”
(Like he does in Keen 4) and all of that jargon. Anyways, Commander Keen is
supposedly trying to stop Mortimer McMire from destroying the Universe and such;
it was 1993, and there was still a chance of the Keen series being finished
(though we got the bad answer in DOOM II), so it was sort of hinting that maybe
Keen 7-9 would be released fairly soon… it’s been 14 years since this game was made;
and still no Universe is Toast… Sigh… – anyways, he gives you the computer card, and
now you have to go up the to the next floor. Get the gems, kill the Bouncers, avoid the spikes,
deactivate the force field, and… we’re done!

Stage 7: Trash Boss

Enemies: Trash Boss

Description: ANOTHER boss already?? Sheesh, what a day… or night, in this case.
Anyways, this is the final section of the junkyard scene in the game. Good luck mashing up
this metalhead…

Fighting the Trash Boss: As you might assume, he’s called the Trash Boss for a reason.
He’s a large robot who… well, attacks you by launching garbage at you.
Not quite as menacing as the last few. Anyways, the strategy is simple, here.
SHOOT AND DODGE. Anyways, I’m gonna talk about one really odd thing I noticed
when fighting this guy. Yes, he certainly does use trash against you… tin cans, apple cores,
crumpled-up paper, AND… A PIGEON?? That’s right, one of the many garbage-like items
included in his arsenal is A LIVING PIGEON. It’s just out-of-place. If this game was a bit less obscure;
at least as popular as Commander Keen or Duke Nukem (the two series this game was trying to emulate),
those hippies at PeTA would be suing for the “exploitment of digital wildlife”… Oh, PLEASE!
Anyways, after you’ve killed him, you’ll get a key. Take the elevator up and unlock the door to get a keycard.
And now you’ve just completed another stage…

Stage 8: Electronics Lab

Enemies: Mutant Slugs, Mutant Caterpillars, Thug Mutants

Description: This is one of the three main labs in the building. This is the Electronics Lab; possibly
where they made all of the robots you’re having to fight. Well, guess what you’re NOT going to find in
this stage? ROBOTS. Very un-fitting, eh? However, there is one feature to this stage that makes it
possibly the most unique stage in the entire game– in this stage you will become your own enemy…
you’ll get to see what it feels like: In this stage you are going to be mutated into a SLUG!
Not only that, but your skin color matches your clothing color, and you even attack by BITING!
This is a such a great game, isn’t it?

Basic Walkthrough: You start the stage at the far-left. There is a ladder to your right, and to the
right of that ladder is another hallway. The hallway contains some gems and a Mutant Caterpillar.
Go into the hallway, get the gems, kill the bug, and then climb down the ladder. Kill the next
Mutant Caterpillar. To your left are some gems. You’ll need to get keys to unlock the doors.
Now head to the right. You should see some elevators over the spiked pit. Cross them over to the other
side of the pit, just make sure you don’t touch the spikes hanging from the ceiling! Climb up the
ladder for bombs, or keep going right otherwise. Kill the Mutant Caterpillar and the Thug Mutant.
You’re probably going to start wondering where all of the keys are. Well, the first one is past the
ladder; jump over the ladder pit and continue right; you’ll see it in the air. Now climb up the
ladder leading up. The door to the left contains a 1-Up. Now go back down the ladder, head right,
climb down the next ladder, continue right, climb up the next ladder, and jump onto the ledge.
You’ll find another key. Now go back left. Activate the beacon and jump off the ledge.
Go down into the hallway underneath the stairs. You’ll see what looks like a green force-field.
Touch it; I dare you! AHA! You have been turned into a cute little green slug! Now you have
the ability to crawl into tiny spaces. Anyways, keep going left through the crawl-space and
get all of the keys that you can find. Stop when you get to the end of the hallway.
Now go back right; bite all of the enemy Slugs in your way. Go up the ledge, and then turn
around and go up the staircase. Keep going right. At the end of the corridor is a pink force field.
It will turn you back into your human form. You can only unlock doors in human form.
Now use your keys to unlock the two doors in this corridor. One of them is a blue shard.
Now, go back down under the staircase and mutate back into the slug form. Go left, and then,
jump down the pit. You’ll probably eventually land on an elevator. Get the keys at the far-left and
then start crawling to the right. Go up the stairs. Continue left and fall down the elevator pit.
Get all of the keys and the medical kit within the crevices. Now head left. Pass through the
green mutagen beam. Now pass through the pink one. You’ll be turned back to your human form.
Climb down the ladder. Go through the hallway. At the end of the hall, you’ll see the hostage above you.
Use your blue shard and rescue her. She’ll give you a computer chip, and she also tells you that
the tiny Nuclear Bomb is in the next stage. Now jump off the ledge and continue right.
Climb over the radioactive barrels. At the end of the room, you’ll see a door atop a suspended
metal platform. Inside the door is a green shard. Now go back the way came, and return to the green
mutagen beam beneath the set of stairs. Go right, turn around, climb up the stairs, and go inside
the pink mutagen beam. You’ll be turned back into a human. Now go right; down the stairs,
climb the ladder, jump onto the ledge, run to the far-right of the hall; deactviate the bridge
with the shard, climb down the ladder, deactivate the exit force field, and you’re done!

Color Switch Code: Red, Magenta, Blue, Green, Cyan

Stage 9: Genetics Lab

Enemies: Robo-Turrets, Sticky Mutants, Thug Mutants, Guard Robots

Description: So this is where the magic happens; where these foul monsters were created.
Much like the previous stage, this one is pretty big, so don’t get mad if it takes awhile.
THE NUCLEAR BOMB IS IN THIS STAGE. DON’T MISS IT.

Basic Walkthrough: The stage starts at the far-left of the area in a hallway filled with all sorts of
machinery for genetic engineering. Head right and get the bombs, the key, and the machine gun
on the way. Climb up the ladder. Open the door and get the medical kit. Climb up the next ladder.
Get the key and the gem, and open up the door. Now go back down the ladders. When you get
to the bottom, head right. Fall down the pit and stay to the right. You’ll find two rooms. The first
contains the blue shard and some keys. The next contains some bonus items. Now go back
up the ladder, and then head right. Wait at the left side of the pit for the elevator. Take it up and
then go back to the hallway you started in. Head left. Climb up the next ladder. Kill the Robo-Turret
and get the items. Keep going up. In this room you’ll find a Robo-Turret and two keys.
Head right and climb up the next ladder. Unlock the two doors to the left. Now go right and
push the large cement block. Kill the Robo-Turrets on the way; and then continue to push it
until it falls into the pit. There’s a Guard Robot on the other side of the pit, so you’ll need to kill
it to get to the other side. Now jump into the pit, and stay in the center. You should fall on an
elevator on the way down. Now wait for the elevator to go to the top and jump onto the other side
of the pit (to the right). Get the items and destroy the monsters. Unlock the door at the far-right of
the hall and climb down the ladder. Unlock the door. Head left. Unlock the next door.
The green shard is inside this one. Climb down the ladder. Get the key. Head right. Unlock the next door.
Climb down the ladder. Head left. Unlock the door. Climb down the ladder. Head right.
Climb down the ladder. You’ll be at the bottom of the area. Unlock all of the doors on both sides, and
then climb back up the ladder. Now head right. You’ll come to the end of the hall stopping a pit.
Wait for the elevator to come down. Then jump onto it. When you get to the top floor, jump into
the hall to your right. If you climb the ladder, you’ll see the hostage trapped behind the force field.
Go back down the ladder, head right, and then down the next ladder. The ladder leading up is
blocked off by a bridge. The first hallway down has two doors. One of them contains the cyan shard.
Get it and go down more. Ignore the next hall down, you don’t need to go into it until you’ve saved the hostage.
Go down to the next one. Insert the green shard into its slot. Go to the left and unlock the
doors for bonus items. Go down the next ladder. Get the bonus items. Now go down the next ladder.
At the bottom, you’ll need to insert the blue and cyan shards into their respective slots to deactivate
the force fields. Head left. At the end of the hallway is the Nuclear Bomb. Now go back up the ladder.
When you’re at the top, head right. Climb up the next ladder to see that the bridge has been deactivated.
Rescue the hostage and get the computer chip. Now go back down. Go down the next ladder. Go to the
hallway with the exit and deactivate the force field. Now exit. Hurrah! We’re almost there!

Stage 10: Specimens Lab

Enemies: Robo-Turrets

Description: This is where the specimens to the deadly new mutants are kept. The lab also
contains embryos of the baby mutants and holographic versions of their adult forms.
Very short stage. Also the location of the infamous “Apogee Room”.

Basic Walkthrough: After you’ve just clobbered those last two complex mazes, you get this “breather stage”.
The red shard is even optional! All you pretty much have to do is run to the right and walk by the holographic mutants,
which include what vaugely resemble mutant versions of a praying mantis, a lion, and even a
Yorp from Commander Keen! Then a holographic version of this guy called the “Enforcer” pops up and
tells you about how his mutant embryos are almost ready to be released upon the city to destroy it.
Then you walk by the incubated mutant embryos. Kill the Robo-Turret, and then leave the stage.

Secrets:

  • You may have heard of a secret “Apogee Room” concealed in this place. Well, I’ll tell ya how to get there.
First, grab the red shard at the beginning of the stage. Walk to the exit and insert the shard into its slot.
Now go back to the entrance. Jump atop the entrance gate, and wait for the elevator. The elevator will take
you up to a suspended bridge. You can actually walk across the ring on the hologram generators.
Walk across the first and get the key. Go climb up the ladder. Kill the Robo-Turrets. Now head right and
activate the beacon. Jump down onto the next hologram generator. There is a key to the left. You can use
the x-shaped towers as ladders to get the items on the ceiling. Climb up the pole and keep going right.
Walk onto the next hologram generator and get the key. Climb to the top of the pole and get the next.
Now keep going right. Unlock all of the purple doors. The first leads to a hallway that contains the secret key.
The second, third, and fourth all contain bonus items. Then, finally, at the end of the hall is a the
ironically marquee’d Secret Door. Open it and you will walk in to the APOGEE ROOM.
Inside the room are George Broussard, Jim Norwood (creator of this game), and Scott Miller. They tell
you about how there are supplies in the next floor up. Some interesting items in the main room are
various items and enemies from the Commander Keen games, Duke Nukem, and Bio Menace.
Up the ladder is a Secret Level Gem, a medical kit, a bonus crystal, some keys and doors, and
a pack of plasma bullets. Oh; and don’t try to shoot the Apogee men or else, the creator of the game,
Jim Norwood will pull out a rapid-firing plasma gun and shoot the heck outta you.
Quite funny, really… well, maybe for us…

Stage 11: Killer ‘Pillers

Enemies: Killer ‘Pillers, Thug Mutants

Description: Yes, another boss stage. Well, sort of. You don’t actually have to kill these things,
but you should if you want ‘em outta the way!

Fighting the Killer ‘Pillers: You should know that each individual segment of their bodies can
be destroyed; meaning you can end up with a bunch of flying caterpillar heads with some
unconnected segments following loosely behind. Jump on top of the entrance gate and wait for
the elevator. Jump across each elevator, and don’t fall! At the far-right of the battlezone is a single key.
Now take one of the elevators up into a series of hallways filled with weapons and Thug Mutants.
The ledge to the left has the keycard within its door. Now head to the right. Kill the
Thugs and activate the beacon. Climb the ladder. Head left. Use the keycard to deactivate
the force field and save the hostage. He will give you a… COMPUTER CHIP! Go back down to
the very bottom of the battlezone and head to the far-right. Deactivate the force field, and you can leave the stage.

Stage 12: The Enforcer

Enemies: The Enforcer, Robo-Turrets, Thug Mutants, Robo-Tanks, Guard Robots

Description: And ANOTHER boss, but this one is the final boss of volume 2, so that’s okay.
You’ll be fighting a flying robotic skull named “The Enforcer”.

Fighting the Enforcer: It’s tricker to get to the Enforcer than to actually fight him. Anyways,
just fight the robots and mutants and try to get to the top of the battlezone. When you do,
you’ll be fighting the Enforcer. The Enforcer floats around and fires a heavy arsenal of bombs,
rockets, and other things. Just shoot him and try to not fall. When you kill him, you get the
Computer Chip… Deactivate the force field, insert the Nuclear Bomb (if you have it) into the socket,
and LEAVE! The game cuts to the ending…

Ending:

Snake Logan recovers a chip from the destroyed Enforcer, showing the location of Master Cain’s
fortress. He walks out the battlezone and heads into the hangar.

Bad Ending: While trying to find the ship, Snake is killed by a swarm of mutants. A few days later,
Master Cain has been destroying the entire country using his mutants. With nobody to stop them,
Master Cain proceeds to destroy the entire country, and eventually the world… THE END

Good Ending: Snake inserts the Nuclear Bomb into the slot, and gets inside tha plane. He flies out
of the lab just before it explodes in a huge mushroom cloud. A day alter, a television signal is
interrupted by footage of a large, dragon-like mutant killing a civillian and destroying a city. Master Cain
implies on the broadcast that there is only one day left, and unless he is stopped, he will unleash
all of his mutants upon the rest of the country. Snake does not hesitate to get to Master Cain’s fortress…

===VOLUME 3===

Story: Snake is wished good luck on fighting Master Cain and his mutants in the fortress (if he makes it)
and Snake reminds his teammates to save him a ‘cold one’ for after the mission. The pilot of the jet
uses the relays that Snake has given him to Cain’s fortress, and Snake takes his gun and runs into
the barricade…

Stage 1: Barricade

Enemies: Thug Mutants, Mutant Snakes, Bomb Mutants

Description: This is the main entrance to Master Cain’s main stronghold. Good luck!

Basic Walkthrough: You start the stage in the middle of a battlefield amidst a dark forest and some
tall grass. Keep walking right. You’ll be facing some Mutant Snakes on the way. Also, keep in mind
that if you see a metallic-looking object sticking out of the grass, jump over it! They are land mines set
up as traps by Master Cain. When you get to the entrance of the fortress, you can activate the beacon
as a checkpoint. Continue right and climb up the ladder. Watch out for the Snake on the ledge above you!
Anyways, go left. Climb the ladder. Unlock the door to the left. It contains a blue shard. Now go right.
Climb up the ladder. Go left. Climb up the next ladder. Go right. Climb up the ladder. Unlock the door
to the right; it contains a cyan shard. Now go left. Climb the ladder. Ignore the force field to the left;
unless you want the items. DON’T Deactivate the force field to your right and go to the exit on that
side! It’s a trap. Instead, deactivate the force-field to your left and walk through the hall. Grab the
hidden items just above the beacon. Keep going left and you will find the exit.

Secrets: To the far top-left of the stage is a secret stash of items. To get it, unlock the force field
to the your right at the top floor. Activate the beacon. Jump through the ceiling just a bit to the
right of it. One of the items inside includes an invincibility potion. Now go back down the ladder
to your right. Jump through the wall to your left. Jump across the path of ladders while invincible.
At the other side is a ton of items, but it’s not really even worth it. Sorry…

Stage 2: Fort Entrance

Enemies: Thug Mutants, Robo-Turrets, Bomber-Bots

Description: This is a purple battlezone filled with robots and mutants. It’s big,
but not very difficult. Watch out for the mines!

Basic Walkthrough: Not even an entrance gate for this one! Anyways, grab the grenades
and jump over the mines. Keep heading right. Get the keys and kill the Thug Mutant.
Keep heading right and avoid the bombs coming from the Bomber-Bot. Go right into a
hallway full of robots. Eventually you will find a ladder. Climb up it. To your right is a
key and a pack of plasma bullets. Take them and go left. At the edge of the hall,
you can kill the Bomber-Bot that plauged you earlier. He is apparently guarding a key.
Go back to the right and up the next ladder. Go left. Go up the next ladder. The first door to
your right contains the cyan shard. Now go back to the left and up the ladder. Get the items
to the far-right of the hall. Activate the beacon. Destroy the Bomber-Bot to your right and keep
going left. By the time you get to the far-left of the room, deactivate the force field surrounding
the hostage and rescue her. She’ll give you the computer chip. Now just simply keep
heading right until you see a ladder within reach. (Not the one below you). Climb it and
continue to head right. Deactivate the force field and leave the stage.

Stage 3: Guard Tower

Enemies: Robo-Turrets, Bomber-Bots, Guard Robots, Robo-Tanks

Description: This stage is an extremely tall tower in Master Cain’s fortress. As you
might expect, the exit is at the top. You need to get the computer chip and then find the exit (duh).

Basic Walkthrough: Take the red grenade. Climb atop the radioactive barrels and
throw it onto the land mines so that they explode. Keep going right. Get the machine
gun and then the super bullets. Get the key. Now head back left. Unlock the door and
get the blue shard. Now go back RIGHT. Deactivate the stone gate with the shard and
destroy the Robo-Tank. Behind it is a green shard. You will deactivate the bridge blocking
the ladder up. Get the keys and activate the beacon to your left. Now head right.
Climb the ladder. Head left over the marble bridge. Activate the first elevator. Now go down and
unlock the doors for items. Now head left and destroy the robots behind the balcony.
Now climb up either ladder above you and destroy the robots. Head right and hop across
the cement blocks. Activate the beacon when you get to the other side of the tower.
Climb down the ladder. Inside the door is another green shard. Now climb up the ladders
and platforms in the tower. Get the items to your left. Keep going up. Destroy the robots
and head left across the marble bridge. Now climb down the ladder. Head left and
deactivate the next bridge with the green shard. Climb up the next ladder.
Rescue the hostage and get the computer chip. Activate the bridge switch. Walk right across the
bridge and deactivate the force field guarding the exit.

Secrets: On the ladder that leads to the hostage, destroy the third Robo-Turret (at the top).
Jump through the wall it guards and get the Secret Level Gem.

Stage 4: Cyborg Trouble

Enemies: Cyber-Soldiers, Mutant Slugs, Shocker-Bots, Master-Minds

Description: This is a maze-like stage filled with evil robots; including
two new ones! Watch out for the Shocker-Bots…

Basic Walkthrough: Take the key and the plasma pack atop the
entrance gate. Climb up the ladder. Kill the Slug at the top and climb up the
next one. Kill the Slug, and watch out for the bullets fired by a nearby
Cyber-Soldier. Destroy him and then climb the ladder to the right. Kill the
Slug to ther right and get the keys. Now head left. Climb up the ladder.
Head right and climb down
the next ladder. The door next to the beacon contains the green shard. Now climb
up the next ladder and continue to head right. Once you get to the far-right of the
hallway, deactivate the bridge with the green shard and climb down the ladder.
Keep on the lookout for Shocker-Bots. Climb up the next ladder. Continue right.
Climb down the next ladder. The door contains the blue shard. Now turn around
and head left. Climb up the ladder at the end of the hall. Continue left through the
hallway. Climb down the next ladder and then climb UP the one after that. Keep going
left and climb down the ladder. Continue right. You’ll come to a Master-Mind.
Deactivate it with the blue shard. Now, just keep going left until you see the ladder.
Climb down. The cyan shard is somewhere in this hallway. Climb up the final ladder right
above the hostage. Use the cyan shard and deactivate the force-field.
The hostage gives you a computer chip and warns you about the giant robot in the next stage
called “Goliath”. Now try to get to the bottom floor of the area and head right for the rest of the stage.
Deactivate the force-field and you can leave the exit.

Stage 5: Goliath!

Enemies: Goliath, Robo-Tanks, Bomber-Bots

Description: Another boss stage. You’ll fight Goliath, who is sort of like the
“big brother” of all of the other Robo-Tanks. He is easily the second largest
boss in the entire game; only being topped by Skull Man.

Fighting Goliath: Before you do anything, turn on the elevator switch. Now
head right and try to dodge Golaith’s fireballs. Shoot at Goliath and the robot
behind him for awhile until your health meter goes down to about 2 or 3 units.
Return to the far-left of the room and wait for the elevator. Head right. Down in
the ladder pit is a medical kit and a pack of plasma bullets. Climb back up
the ladder and head right. Destroy the first Bomber-Bot and get the two
machine guns. Destroy the second and get the red grenades. Now go back
to the battle-area of the stage and finish off Goliath with some plasma shots
and grenades. When he’s finished, you will immediately acquire a blue shard.
Head right and destroy the Robo-Tank atop the balcony. Now deactivate the
force-field and go to the next stage!

Stage 6: Armory

Enemies: Mutant Slugs, Fire Demons, Sticky Mutants, Mutant Snakes

Description: This is where Master Cain’s soldiers store their weapons and such.
The main gimmick of this stage is the large ammount of keycards; you need to
figure out which hallway leads to the one shard that can rescue the hostage.

Basic Walkthrough: You start at the far-left in a hallway. Keep going right.
Activate the elevator and jump into the 3rd hallway. Get the blue shard. Now go
back to the far-left of the stage (where you started). Climb up the ladder.
At the top, deactivate the force field with the shard and rescue the hostage.
Use the computer chip to get to the exit, which is to the left of where the
hostage was standing.

Stage 7: Mutants Attack

Enemies: Radioactive Slime, Critter Mutants, Thug Mutants, Mutant Snakes

Description: This stage is pure mutant (and slime). This would probably have to be my
least favorite stage in the entire game. The reason? Snakes!! And lots of them.
They are friggin’ ANNOYING! Not only that, but the spikes, too.

Basic Walkthrough: Climb up the ladder. Get the keys. Head to the right; get the keys,
and climb the ladder. Head left. Climb the ladder and go to the top hall. Wait for the elevator,
or just jump down. Take the next elevator to the right up to the second-highest ledge.
Walk across the spiked rotater. Jump from one ledge to the next. At the far-right of the
hall is a door containing the blue shard. Now go back left, and cross the spiked rotater once again.
Jump down and then go right. Deactivate the force-field. In this next hallway is the cyan shard.
When you have the cyan shard, go left and climb the ladder. Go left some more and up the elevator.
Ride it to the high ledge. Climb the ladder to the top floor. Now go right. At the far-right of the
top floor is the hostage. Deactivate the force-field with the cyan shard. Rescue him and he
will give you a computer chip. Now go left, climb down the ladder, and walk right across the spiked
rotater again. Jump off the ledge and continue right. Deactivate the force field, and you’re done!

Stage 8: Robots Attack

Enemies: Robo-Rockets, Robo-Turrets, Bouncers, Guard Robots, Cyber Soldiers, Robo-Tanks

Description: Similar thing to the last stage, but this time with a robotic theme. Even the background is all
robotic and such in this one. Anyways, it’s not too long; certainly less painful than the previous stage.

Basic Walkthrough: Head right. Destroy the Guard Robot with the grenades. Climb the ladder to the right.
Destroy the next Guard Robot and take the items he is guarding. Jump off the balcony and destroy the Robo-Tank.
Keep going right. Climb over the barrels and destroy the next Robo-Tank. Then climb over the
radioactive waste barrels and take the items in the air. Destroy the bouncer and activate the beacon.
Climb up the next tower of barrels and jump onto the ledge to the left. Continue left and destroy more robots. Keep
going left until you find the next ladder. Climb up the ladder and go right. You’ll see the hostage to your left; but you
need a blue shard. Head right and climb up the next ladder. Head right again. The blue shard is in the door to the
far-right of the hall. Now go back left and down the ladder. Go left again. Deactivate the force-field and rescue the
hostage. She will give you a computer chip. Go back right and up the ladder. Go right and deactivate the force-field.
You may now leave the stage.

Stage 9: Utility Maintenence

Enemies: Mutant Slugs, Plasma Men, Sticky Mutants, Radioactive Slime, Info-Bot

Description: This is a high-radiation stage. Don’t touch the glowing green areas of the stage until you have
found the Anti-Radiation Pill. Also watch out for the Plasma Men, they are a major pest.

Basic Walkthrough: Walk right and kill the Slug. Talk to the Info-Bot. It will tell you that you need to find the
Anti-Radiation Pill. Climb up the ladder. Go right. Climb up the next ladder. Go left, now. Climb up the next
ladder when you see it. Go right and climb up the next ladder. Now go left and climb up the next. Now go right
through the hallway. Climb down the first ladder. Head right. Go down the next. Head left. You should see
an Anti-Radition Pill within an already-open door. Activate the beacon. From this point onward, it is save to
pass through the glowing green areas. Head right. Climb down the last ladder. Head left and unlock the door.
It contains the blue shard. Go down to the bottom of the area and head to the far-right. Deactivate the
force-field and save the hostage. Take the computer chip. Go up to the top-right-most section of the area.
Deactivate the force-field and leave the stage.

Secrets: Jump through the wall above the exit gate to obtain the Secret Level Gem.

Stage 10: Main Control

Enemies: Robo-Rockets, Bomb Mutants, Mutant Slugs, Bomber-Bots, Trash Carriers

Description: Almost there… This is the main control center, beware of the giant eyes that shoot huge
sparks in all directions!

Basic Walkthrough: This stage is very short if you know where everything is (much like the Armory).
Move to the right, and climb up the ladder. The blue shard is in the fifth hallway on the right
(starting from the bottom and below the hall with the beacon). Go up one floor and activate the beacon.
Go to the top-right hallway. At the very end you will find the cyan shard. Now head to the top-left hallway
and deactivate the two force-fields. Save the hostage and she’ll give you the computer chip. Now go to the
sixth hallway on the right (starting from the bottom) and deativate the force field with the computer chip.
Jump off the ledge as far-right as you can go. If you land atop the large metal pole, jump as far-right as
possible again. Don’t land in the acid pit! You should end up atop the exit gate. Go inside it and you’re
onto the next level!

Stage 11: Circle of Death

Enemies: Shocker-Bots, Thug Mutants, Robo-Tanks

Description: The stage gets its name from the large “circles” of Shocker-Bots in the stage. As you might know,
they are extremely deadly and can kill in one hit. An invincibility potion can’t even stop ‘em! This is the
final stage with a hostage.

Basic Walkthrough: You start at the far-left, to the left of a circle made of Shocker-Bots. Get the keys, and
wait for an empty space in their circle. Get inside it and stay on the ladder. When the empty space is above
you, climb up the ladder. You’ll be surrounded by another circle, but this time there is a mirage block.
Jump atop it when the empty space in the circle is above you, and jump to your right. Now you get a break,
filled with fire traps and Thug Mutants. Keep going right. Even though you will see some mirage blocks ahead,
don’t climb on them yet. At the far-right of the area is a blue shard. Take it, and THEN climb the mirage blocks.
At the top block, there is a slot in which you must insert the blue shard to deactivate the force-field. Quickly
jump to the ledge to the right before the mirage block disappears. Kill the monsters, climb the ladder, head
left, and activate the beacon. Wait for a set of mirage blocks to appear. Wait for the next to appear once you’re
on them, and so on. At the other side of the gap is a path with doors along the way. Don’t unlock them if you want
some of the more useful items. Press the scroll down key (PgDwn) and you’ll see another “circle” of Shocker-Bots.
Wait for a gap in their path, then jump down and destroy them. Once they are all gone, unlock each door. One
of them contains the cyan shard. You’ll have to jump off the ledge and re-trace your steps back to the very area
above. Deactivate the force-field guarding the hostage and rescue him. He will give a… wait for it, wait for it…
COMPUTER CHIP!!! FINALLY! THE VARIETY WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! Go to the bottom of the
area and head right. Deactivate the force-field and continue right. Destroy the Robo-Tanks, and prepare for
the final showdown with Master Cain…

Secrets: After you deactivate the first force-field (with the blue shard), go to the far-right of the little corridor.
See the corner near the wall of the far-right? Jump through it to get the Secret Level Gem.

Stage 12: Master Cain

Enemies: Master Cain, Critter Mutants, Mutant Snakes

Description: This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for… the final showdown… the armageddon…
the last battle… the big kahuna… the radical rashout– Anyways, this is the final stage of the whole
game, in which you will be fighting Master Cain himself…

Fighting Master Cain: The stage takes place on the very top of the fortress. So, Master Cain is probably
the only character in the game roughly equally as intelligent or strong as yourself; he can crouch and shoot
high and low shots with his energy staff. You want to shoot him as much as possible, but avoid the shots.
Jumping works best. Also, watch out for the Mutants that get in the way of your battle. When Cain transforms
into a giant flaming monster, just run away. Your shots can’t damage him at all in this form, and this form
will kill you on contact. Just continue to shoot and bomb him, and then stay away when he is in his monster
form. At the far-right of the area is a crevice full of items and a beacon. When you have finally killed him, he falls
to the ground unconscious covered in wounds and flames. You recieve a blue shard… And now… the game…
is over… Deactivate the force-field and walk to the exit gate to see the ending…

Ending:

Before Snake Logan walks away, he pulls the mask off of the face of Master Cain, only to reveal– AGENT CARMIKEL??
Yes, apparently, Agen Carmikel was left behind and forgotten during “Operation Swamp Dog”. Mr. Carmikel was angry,
all alone, and he wanted revenge, so he created the mutants and robots, and the buildings… Snake convinces Carmikel
that he is insane and out of his mind, but Carmikel refuses to comply and presses the self-destruction button on his armor
as he screams, “You may have defeated me, but I’m taking you to Hell with me!!”. In a massive explosion, Snake jumps
out of the way, and Master Cain is dead. The rest of the country is in ruins, but it will be fixed, as Master Cain and his
minions will never be a threat to the safety of the world again.

BUT… as a breif afterthought: The game expects us to be surprised that Master Cain is really Agent Carmikel. Do
we even know who he is? I’ve never heard of him before… unless… remember that 1992 Apogee game, “Secret Agent”?
Remember the blonde protoganist of the game? Is THIS guy Agent Carmikel? Did we actually once play a game
starring Master Cain’s old self?

This game has an awesome plot, but many questions remain unanswered: Who the crap is Skull Man? Is Master Cain
indeed the evil version of the hero from Secret Agent? And what kind of sick bastard throws a living pigeon in the trash??

We may never know… We… may… never… know…

=== THE END ===

=== CHEATS ===

After your long adventure, you deserve to learn some new secrets that can be done anytime!

  • Hold down C-A-T for 99 bullets (of whatever type you’re using) and 90 grenades (green only).

  • Hold down up until you hear a buzzing noise and then press down to become invincible for
    about 2 seonds.

Super Plasma Bolt: Hold up until you hear a buzzing sound. Press fire and you will release a giant
electrical energy beam. The beam is so powerful that the radiation takes one unit away from your
health.

Fire Ball: Hit left-right-left-right-left-right-left-right-left-right and then press the fire button. You will
release a large amount of fire balls and turn into a skeleton for reasons unknown. You’ll lose one
unit of energy, but it’s worth it.

Electron Shield: Move back and forth several times and then jump. You will turn into a statue-like
object and destroy all enemies that touch you.

Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed my walkthrough and it got you through the game! See me next time when
I make my next!
