译注：

主句：<Scientists>（主语）<jump to the rescue>（谓语，:前来救驾）<with some distinctly shaky evidence（介词短语做伴随状语，:用一些明显站不稳脚的证据）<to the effect that...>(后置定语，:to the effect这个词组的很特别，意思是“大致说的是”）

同位语从句：（the effect )that(引导词）<insects would eat us up>（主句）<if birds failed to control them>(虚拟条件状语从句）。

4.But we have at least drawn near the point of admitting that birds should contine as a matter of intrinsic right,regardless of the presence of economic advantage to us.
