Recursion

There are three crucial elements of recursion:

  • Determine the parameters and return value
  • Determine the termination condition
  • Determine the logic of every single recursion

Solution:
1、Recursion Method

/**

 *     int val;
 *     TreeNode left;
 *     TreeNode right;
 *     TreeNode() {}
 *     TreeNode(int val) { this.val = val; }
 *     TreeNode(int val, TreeNode left, TreeNode right) {
 *         this.val = val;
 *         this.left = left;
 *         this.right = right;
 *     }
 * }
 */
class Solution {
    public List<Integer> preorderTraversal(TreeNode root) {
        List<Integer> result = new ArrayList<>();
        preorder(root ,result);
        return result;
    }

    private void preorder(TreeNode root, List<Integer> result){
        if(root == null)
            return;
        result.add(root.val);
        preorder(root.left, result);
        preorder(root.right, result);
    }
}

2、Iterative Method

/**

 *     TreeNode left;
 *     TreeNode right;
 *     TreeNode() {}

 *         this.left = left;
 *         this.right = right;
 *     }
 * }
 */
class Solution {
    public List<Integer> preorderTraversal(TreeNode root) {
        List<Integer> result = new ArrayList<>();
        if(root == null)
            return result;

        Stack<TreeNode> stack = new Stack<>();
        stack.push(root);
        while(!stack.isEmpty()){
            TreeNode node = stack.pop();
            result.add(node.val);
            if(node.right != null)
                stack.push(node.right);
            if(node.left != null)
                stack.push(node.left);
        }
        return result;
    }
}

3、Unified Iterative Method

/**

 *     TreeNode(int val, TreeNode left, TreeNode right) {
 *         this.val = val;

 */
class Solution {
    public List<Integer> preorderTraversal(TreeNode root) {

            if(node != null){
                stack.pop(); // The following steps will add front, middle and rear nodes.
                if(node.right != null) stack.push(node.right);   // Add the left node
                if(node.left != null) stack.push(node.left);     // Add the right node
                stack.push(node); // Add the middle node
                stack.push(null); // Add a null node as the mark
            }else{

}

Solution:
1、Recursion Method

/**
 * Definition for a binary tree node.
 * public class TreeNode {
 *     int val;
 *     TreeNode left;
 *     TreeNode right;
 *     TreeNode() {}
 *     TreeNode(int val) { this.val = val; }
 *     TreeNode(int val, TreeNode left, TreeNode right) {
 *         this.val = val;
 *         this.left = left;
 *         this.right = right;
 *     }
 * }
 */
class Solution {
    public List<Integer> postorderTraversal(TreeNode root) {
        List<Integer> result = new ArrayList<>();
        postorder(root, result);
        return result;
    }

    private void postorder(TreeNode root, List<Integer> result){
        if(root == null)
            return;
        postorder(root.left, result);
        postorder(root.right, result);
        result.add(root.val);
    }
}

2、Iterative Method

public List<Integer> postorderTraversal(TreeNode root) {
        List<Integer> result = new ArrayList<>();
        if(root == null)
            return result;

        Stack<TreeNode> stack = new Stack<>();
        stack.push(root);
        while(!stack.isEmpty()){
            TreeNode node = stack.pop();
            result.add(node.val);
            if(node.left != null)
                stack.push(node.left);
            if(node.right != null)
                stack.push(node.right);
        }
        Collections.reverse(result);
        return result;
    }

Thought:

  • Similar to the recursion method, but we should notice two points:
    • Should do stack.push(node.left) first
    • Should do Collections.reverse(result) once

3、Unified Iterative Method

/**
 * Definition for a binary tree node.
 * public class TreeNode {
 *     int val;
 *     TreeNode left;
 *     TreeNode right;
 *     TreeNode() {}
 *     TreeNode(int val) { this.val = val; }
 *     TreeNode(int val, TreeNode left, TreeNode right) {
 *         this.val = val;
 *         this.left = left;
 *         this.right = right;
 *     }
 * }
 */
class Solution {
    public List<Integer> postorderTraversal(TreeNode root) {
        List<Integer> result = new ArrayList<>();
        if(root == null)
            return result;

        Stack<TreeNode> stack = new Stack<>();
        stack.push(root);
        while(!stack.isEmpty()){
            TreeNode node = stack.peek();
            if(node != null){
                stack.pop(); // The following steps will add front, middle and rear nodes.
                stack.push(node); // Add the middle node
                stack.push(null); // Add a null node as the mark
                if(node.right != null) stack.push(node.right);   // Add the left node
                if(node.left != null) stack.push(node.left);     // Add the right node
            }else{
                stack.pop(); // Pop the null node
                result.add(stack.pop().val); // Add to the result
            }
        }
        return result;
    }
}
