项目介绍:Cognitive Neuroscience research on medial temporal network functioning, aging & dementia
Within the context of the new SFB 1436 “Neuronal Resources on Cognition”, one 3.5-year PhD is available at the DZNE Magdeburg to study how hippocampal vascularization patterns affect cognitive functioning, using a spatial memory task that relies on a posterior medial temporal network of the brain (including the hippocampus). The successful candidate (f/m/d) will develop a training procedure where different groups of younger and older adults (including high-functioning “SuperAgers”) perform a smartphone-based spatial navigation task in the real world and combine it with performance measures from a virtual reality (VR) paradigm to investigate how interindividual variability in neural resources relate to changes in performance in the context of a training intervention.
职位要求:
MSc in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging methods or related
Experience in working with different age and patient groups
Interest in working with smartphone data & computational modelling techniques
Prior experience with programming languages such as R, Matlab and/or Python
Reliability, flexibility, passion
German & English language proficiency
For further information (not application!) about this unique opportunity, please email Nadine Diersch (nadine.diersch@dzne.de). To learn more about our research, please visit our websites and follow us on Twitter.
项目任务:
Develop and implement a behavioral training procedure measuring spatial navigation abilities in different participant groups, characterize performance improvements (e.g. by estimating individual learning states using Bayesian modelling) and link them to the neural status of the participants

You develop and apply integrative bioinformatics/biostatistical analysis tools to combine high-dimensional omics data with the latest cytoarchitectural data, and with data from imaging atlases (e.g., JuBrain), with the goal of understanding the influence of genomic variability on interindividual differences in human brain structure and function
You cooperate closely with neuroscientists, physicists, and clinical partners to build up a solid understanding of brain imaging analyses and the scientific/clinical context, and incorporate this information in your algorithm design
You work with experts at the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) to run your algorithms/tools on large distributed computer systems
You generate internationally visible scientific results, by authoring high-quality research papers and presenting your work at national/international conferences
You do occasional national and international travels to strengthen scientific cooperations
招募要求:
Excellent university degree in biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, psychology or a comparable field of study
Very good knowledge in brain imaging and computational tools
Practical experience with deep learning algorithms and software libraries is beneficial
Solid programming skills, preferably in Python, MATLAB and C/C++

介绍:
With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University (North) and half at a university in a developing country (South).
Ghent University only finances the part of the research that will be carried out in Ghent (24 months), the candidate must have full-time co-funding for the other 24 months of research to be carried out in the South.

The Machine and Human Intelligence research group led by Assistant Professor Luigi Acerbi is looking for a PhD candidate eager to work on new machine learning methods for smart, robust, sample-efficient probabilistic inference, with applications in scientific modeling — such as, but not limited to, computational and cognitive neuroscience. The candidate will join a newly established research group with strong links to the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI).
In our group, we are interested in developing novel machine learning approaches for building approximate Bayesian posteriors using only a small number of likelihood evaluations, which can be a game-changer for complex models or when resources are limited. Think of Bayesian optimization, a very effective technique to optimize black-box functions, but scaled up to perform full Bayesian inference. A state-of-the-art framework being developed in our group is Variational Bayesian Monte Carlo (VBMC), which combines Gaussian process surrogates, active learning, variational inference and Bayesian quadrature (Acerbi, NeurIPS; 2018, 2020).
Promising thesis projects include extending the representational power of VBMC (e.g., discrete variables, more complex posteriors, higher dimension); exploiting recent advances in Gaussian process inference for superior scalability; combining VBMC with Bayesian deep learning; strengthening the connections with simulator-based inference; and exploring the theoretical properties of the framework.
招募要求:
Experience in implementing efficient code in Python (e.g., Jax).
Familiarity with Gaussian processes, Bayesian optimization.
Experience with computational modeling and statistical data analysis (e.g., in an applied field such as computational neuroscience).
Previous research experience and publications.
Applicants should have a MSc in computer science, data science, applied mathematics and statistics, physics, computational neuroscience, or a related field.
Applicants who do not currently hold a doctoral student status in the Doctoral Programme in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki are eligible to apply, but in the event of hiring, they are expected to acquire the status during the standard 6-month probationary period.
