The Lion and the Mouse

Original Text:

A LION was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up angrily, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the Mouse piteously entreated, saying: "If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness." The Lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came gnawed the rope with his teeth, and set him free, exclaim "You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor; now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to con benefits on a Lion."

Translated Text:

一只狮子由于被一只老鼠从他脸上跑过而从睡梦中惊醒。他怒气冲冲地站起来,抓住他,正要杀死他,这时老鼠哀求道:“如果你肯饶了我一命,我一定会报答你的善意。”狮子笑了,放了他。不久之后,狮子被一些猎人抓住,他们用绳子把狮子绑在地上。老鼠认出了他的吼声,就用牙齿咬断绳子,把他放了出来,喊道:“你嘲笑我能帮助你,希望我能报答你的恩惠的想法;我现在你知道了,即使是老鼠也有可能帮助狮子。”

1、piteously

A(adv.) in a way that causes you to feel sadness and sympathy(可怜地)

2、bound

A(adj.) certain or extremely likely to happen:

3、gnaw

A(v.) to bite or chew something repeatedly, usually making a hole in it or gradually destroying it:

//Babies like to gnaw hard objects when they're teething.

//A dog lay under the table, gnawing on a bone.

4、roar

A(v.) to make a long, loud, deep sound:

//We could hear the lions roaring at the other end of the zoo.

If a vehicle or aircraft roars somewhere, it moves there very quickly making a lot of noise:

//She looked up as a plane roared overhead.

//The street was full of boys roaring up and down on their motorbikes.

5、con

A(v.) to make someone believe something false, usually so that that person will give you their money or possessions:

    //She felt she had been conned into buying the car.

//Thieves conned him out of his life savings.

//He managed to con £20 out of them (= get that amount from them  by deceiving them).
