function和polynomial的关系

1. function定义

A function is a mapping，即 a recipe that outputs a real number for (any) given real number。（某些functions仅定义在a subset of the real numbers。）
function的input number通常写为$x$，输出常称为$y$，若function名为$f$，则该function value可写为 $y=f(x)$。
如：
Z : { 0 , 1 } m → F Z: \{0,1\}^m\rightarrow \mathbb{F} Z:{0,1}m→F为a function。

2. polynomial定义

基于一个变量$x$的polynomial为：a finite sum of monomials，其中a monomial (in $x$)为 an integer power of $x$ times a real number（而$x$的指数为range from 0 up to any positive integer）。
monomial举例有：$x^3;4.5x^3;-\frac{5}{3}{x}^3;x^{777};1;5x;-6.5$等等。
如：
$\tilde{Z}:{\mathbb{F}}^m\to \mathbb{F}$为a polynomial。

3. function和polynomial的关系

• 所有的polynomial都可称为function：
  如polynomial $3x^3-5.5x+7$ 可表示为function $y=f(x)=3x^3-5.5x+7$，其中the output for input $a$ is $3a^3-5.5a+7$。

• 但是很多function并不是polynomial：
  如$y=f(x)=2^x$以及$y=f(x)=\frac{1}{x}=x^{-1}$等都不是polynomial。

• 若两个polynomials $a(x),b(x)$相等，则当且仅当$a(x)$的系数与$b(x)$的系数一一对应的相同。

• 若两个functions $a(x),b(x)$相等，则是指 for every $x$ in their domain，有$a(x)=b(x)$成立。
  举例为：
  两个polynomials $a(x),b(x)$ in ${\mathbb{Z}}_5[x]$：
  $a(x)=x^5+1$
  $b(x)=x-4$
  有：
  $a(0)=b(0),a(1)=b(1),\cdots ,a(4)=b(4)$
  可称 $a(x)$和$b(x)$为equal functions from ${\mathbb{Z}}_5$ to ${\mathbb{Z}}_5$。
