Abstract
1. Kappa and Tau effect are reviewed in vision, hearing, and touch and with various psychological procedures(absolute and relative judgements task, reproduction adjustment task).
2. Present a model in which spatial, or temporal, judgments in context are a weighted average of the given interval, temporal or spatial, and the expected time or distance that would be traversed at a given velocity.
I. Spatial judgments and the temporal context
1. The classic demonstration of Tau effect was made by Helson and King(1931).
2. Bill and Teft observed negative time-order errors (TOE) which means the length of the first interval tended to be underestimated relative to the second.
II. Temporal judgments and the spatial context
1. Cohen et al. (1953) again used a method of adjustment to demonstrate the kappa effect.
2. Newman and Lee(1972) found that the Kappa effect appears to depend strongly on phenomenal (apparent) rather than physical (actual) distance.
