Placement Season is here and there are a lot of students confused over how they should start preparing for Job Interviews. In this article, I provide a step by step preparation guide for students to tackle job interviews.

Find the skills that interest’s you the most and a job role that you would love doing. For example, if you are aiming for a Software Engineering job learn skills like Web Development, Android Development, etc. Check the job description of the company and that particular role to check whether your skill set matches the job description.

Create a list of 10–15 Companies who are looking for people with your skillset and you think would be good for your career growth. Start Connecting with employees of those companies on Linkedin and find guidance from them.

Networking is a very important part of job search and Linkedin is a great platform that helps you get connected with potential recruiters of that Company. Linkedin can also help someone to connect to like-minded people, be part of a community, create and share resources, etc.

A Resume is an important part of any job interview process which tells the interviewer about your skills, achievements, experience, and career highlights. It is very important to match your resume with the job description of the Company you are applying for. A resume should consist of a Summary or Objective, Education Details, Work Experience, Projects, Skills and Achievements, Extra circular activities, and your contact details.

Companies nowadays use an Applicant Tracking System to filter candidates and make Recruiter’s job easy. The Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a software application that finds keywords from a resume and matches it with the job description. Many free Resume templates can be found online and there are many websites that can create a resume online, for example, novoresume.com, canva.com, resumebuild.com, etc.

Go to the Careers page or search for the Company’s Career page on Google and check for Fresher’s position and apply. Or else you can reach out to Hiring Managers on Linkedin and get a referral. There are other job portals like indeed.com, naukri.com, instahyre.com, etc. where candidates can register with their details and resume and start applying.

So these were the general steps that students should follow while preparing for Job Interviews. Now let me provide you a detailed way of how the Interview Process takes place in College Placements and how students should prepare.

During the Third Year of College, many companies visit the campus to Hire Interns. After you get an offer from these companies you need to work with them for a duration and after the Internship and based on the candidate’s performance the Company decides to issue a Pre Placement Offer.

Internships give you an edge in placements too as Companies do always prefer candidates with experience and Industrial exposure is always helpful, It gives us the opportunity to actually see things happening and experience things under the mentorship of a seasoned professional.

On-Campus Placements happens in the final year of College, conducted by the Placement Cell. Different Companies conduct placement drives on campus to hire a selected number of students. They Conduct different Interview rounds for students and Offer letters are sent to selected students who pass all the rounds. On-Campus Placements are important because many Companies come to your campus and the chances of getting shortlisted are high as you are competing among the college students only.

In Off-campus Placement drive, recruitment is conducted at a common location that may be a particular college or a public place where students from different colleges assemble and take part in the various stages of the campus placement drive. These are Placements where the Student applies to a Company on his own.

When Certain Companies do not come to Campus the students apply to that Company directly through their career’s site or LinkedIn or other job platforms. Students during or after their final year of college can apply for Off-Campus Placement Drives. Many Companies conduct Off-campus placement drive which consists of online tests, phone interviews, and then on-site Interview rounds.

Now before I end, I would like to give a short explaination about the interview rounds. It is important to prepare based on Company specific questions as interview process can differ from one company to another.

Interview Process can be divided into three types of rounds:

  1. Online Round: It consists of an online exam with subjective multiple-choice questions, Aptitude, and Coding test on an online compiler with test cases. In some Companies, they also conduct a pen and paper test.

  2. Technical Round: It consists of questions based on your Core Subjects, Projects, technical skills, and how you are the best fit for the Company. They also test your Problem Solving and Coding where a problem is given to the candidate and he has to provide them with an optimal solution.

  3. HR Round: This is the final round of interview with the HR and it generally consists of Behavioral questions like “Why should I hire you?”, “your strengths and weaknesses” etc. It also involves discussions about Company policies, Bond periods, and Salary Negotiations.
