It’s no surprise, then, that mountains are popular symbols in logo design, especially in industries like beer, bottled water, tourism, camping, outdoor equipment, and more. (Also, if you have the word “summit” in your company name, there’s a good chance you’ll have a mountain in your logo).

The Adidas logo is a three-stripe representation of a mountain that’s reminiscent of the brand’s previous (and classic) “trefoil” logo. As an athletic brand, the mountain represents “the challenge to be faced and the goals to be achieved,” according to former Adidas creative director Peter Moore.

Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, has been climbing in Argentina for decades and became famous within the climbing community. When he launched his brand, he thought it fitted to use a mountain symbol, which is a stylized image of the famous Fitzroy Massif in Patagonia, just above El Chaltén.

Toblerone’s Swiss Alps-inspired logo echoes the triangular shape of the classic chocolate bar. Look closely, and you’ll see a bear hidden in the mountain through the use of negative space — the bear is a symbol of the city of Bern where Toblerone is made.

The mountains represent Wilson Peak, located near Telluride, Colorado (where Coors Brewing Company was founded). The brand’s beer cans depict more realistic looking, snow-capped mountains, and when they turn blue, the beer is cold enough to drink.

Paramount Pictures classic logo features a mountain that’s sometimes referred to as the “Majestic Mountain” — it was reportedly inspired by the Ben Lomond Mountain in Utah drawn by William W. Hodkinson, the founder of Paramount and a native of the Ogden area. Housed in a circle crowned by stars, it still appears at the beginning of each film the studio produces and has remained constant over many decades. The original logo had 24 stars (for each of the two dozen actors under contract in 1916) — the latest version now has 22.

Evian’s logo includes mountain peaks that sit atop its wordmark. The mountain peaks proudly showcase the beauty of its place of origin, Évian-les-Bains on the south shore of Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

As you can see from the above examples, mountain logos can range from rugged and epic-looking to flat and graphic. Here are some questions to ask yourself if you’re considering including a mountain symbol in your logo:

Remember to ask yourself WHY before you make any of these design decisions. As you can see in the examples above, there is an intention behind each design decision being made.

Once you have an idea of what you want for your mountain logo, follow these design tips:

In the logo below, the mountain symbol is geometric, creating sharp angles and points. Because of that, I chose a geometric sans serif font that has similar forms. Matching the style of both elements makes the logo feel unified and more professional. If the symbol had rounded forms, then a more playful font with similar forms would work well.

When you don’t match the style of each element, it makes the logo feel disconnected and overall less professional. In the example below, the logo on the left has a geometric symbol paired with a rounded font. This pairing feels disconnected because the two elements are of different styles. The logo on the right has a geometric symbol paired with a geometric font. This pairing feels unified because the two elements are similar styles.

In the logo below, I chose a dark blue hue for the background color and a lighter blue hue for the symbol and wordmark color. By doing this, it creates a high contrast between the background and foreground elements. This is often what people define as “making the logo pop.” When you ensure the logo has a high contrast between the foreground and background elements, it makes the logo easier to digest and looks more professional.

When your logo does not have a high contrast between the foreground and background elements, it makes the logo harder to digest and looks unprofessional. In the example below, the logo on the left has a low contrast between the foreground and background. This colour combination makes the logo harder to digest and makes it look unprofessional. The logo on the right has a much higher contrast between the foreground and background, making it easier to digest and more professional.

The logo below has three elements: a company name, a symbol and a slogan. All three elements are optically balanced, with no one element taking visual dominance. Each element has visual weight, and the goal is to ensure each element’s visual weight looks optically balanced. When considering balance, you also need to consider the importance of each element. For example, the slogan is less important than the company name, so it should have less visual weight.

When your logo is unbalanced, it can make your company look weak and leave the wrong impression. If there is an imbalance, focusing on the design as a whole becomes difficult, and conveying a message becomes even more difficult. The problem of balance arises when one element visually dominates the others heavily, creating an unbalance. In the example below, the logo on the left is unbalanced because the symbol has more visual weight than the other two elements, making it feel top-heavy. The logo on the right looks optically balanced because each element has a similar visual weight in terms of its importance.
