My professional duties include building data visualizations that a) contain useful information and b) are intuitive to use and interpret. Therefore, it bugs me when I encounter visualizations in the media or on the internet that do not meet these same criteria, and it makes me curious whether other folks see the same problems I do.

The visualizations below represent COVID-19 confirmed cases versus fatalities for the state of Oregon (where I live), courtesy of mSightly. Pop quiz: what is wrong with them?

(1. BANs without context)

BANs (or Big Ass Numbers — it’s an industry term) are useful ways of summarizing and highlighting the most important data in a visualization. These each have two BANs: the top number, representing the total confirmed/fatal cases, and the lower number. What does the lower number represent? Your guess is as good as mine. In fact, if you have a guess, please put it in the comments. I’d love to know. I suspect it represents the total week-over-week change for total confirmed/fatal cases but can find no data to back that up. If it is that, including a plus sign in front of the number seems odd since neither number should ever be negative. I’m pretty sure negative numbers of fatal COVID-19 cases would indicate the beginning of a zombie apocalypse.

BAN(或大屁股数字-这是一个行业术语)是汇总和突出显示可视化中最重要数据的有用方法。

(2. Unlabeled bars)

Compare the graphs of “Total Confirmed Cases” and “Total Fatal Cases.” Are more people dying of COVID-19 this week than catching it? It certainly looks like a possibility. Five of the seven days of data for fatalities are at the maximum level, and only two days of data for confirmed cases match that same level.

Except that’s not true. It turns out the two graphs are at very different scales, but you wouldn’t know that from looking at them. If you hover over them on the website, you can see the highest number of confirmed cases is 344, but the highest number of fatal cases is only 4. You could easily create a wild conspiracy theory involving collusion to hide a sudden massive die-off if you don’t look closely here.

(3. Zero not included on y-axis)

Consider the “Total Confirmed Cases” visualization. What a roller coaster! It appears to have gone from the maximum number of COVID-19 cases on the second and third days to hardly any cases on the sixth. What accounts for such an extreme drop? Did all of the sick people suddenly die? Is there an amazing new vaccine?

Confirmed cases detail

Or is it that the smallest bar still represents 315 cases? That’s only an 8% drop from the maximum, which is not nearly as severe as the graph appears. As a general rule, bar graphs should always include zero on the y-axis, and this is exactly why — especially given the lack of labels. Had this been designed as a line graph, it would have been less misleading.

4. Unlabeled x-axis

Elsewhere on the web page, which includes data for every state and not just Oregon, there is this statement:

Data is updated daily at around 6 pm.

Notice that it does not indicate the time zone. I took these screenshots at 4:30 Pacific time. So, does the final bar represent yesterday’s data or has it already been updated? Trick question! You don’t know what day I took the screenshots, and there’s nothing in the visualization to tell you. As it happens, I took the screenshots on Friday, July 24, 2020 but I too have no way of knowing the actual date range represented. For all I know, there’s been a delay in data entry and this chart could be days, weeks or even months out of date.

Do you see any other potential problems with these visualizations? Am I being overly critical? Let me know your thoughts!
