Two Greatest Female Writers in Greek

Sappho was one of the few female poets we know of from ancient Greek. Most of her poems tend to her emotional feelings about love. When it comes to tragedy plays, Sophocles would be always mentioned as the second of the three greatest Greek writers of tragedy. Both Sappho and Sophocles have great impact on history of literature and their works have had influence on lots of poets.

As a female poet, Sappho’s works are somehow related to female’s traits by expressing her inner feeling about love with indirect words. The history her poems can’t be separated with her biography. Named as “lesbian”, Sappho seems more than one time in her poets to express her relationships with the women and girls. However, Sappho’s works are full of passion that I could not help reading them again and again. According to our text book, in the absence of any clear external evidence about Sappho’s social and sexual relationships, it is best to let her poetry speak for itself (Trulove, Woelfel, Auerbach& Buller, 1991). Sappho’s work to me is piece of art that it contains soul of passion for love. It is so dedicated that I would never want to end reading it. Sometimes, it do make me want to sing along with the poems. Every single word can be a lyric. I am Cancer, one of the twelve constellations of the zodiac. I love Sappho poems that I would borrow her idea to express my love to my girlfriend.

Sophocles was a writer of tragedy. Two most famous plays of his were Antigone and Oedipus Tyrannus. After reading the “Oedipus the King,” I feel that author wanted to express that people can predict the future and know the fate. However, at the end of the play, it shows that nobody can avoid the fate. I think Sophocles was trying to let his readers to realize that fate is inevitable and we need to accept it.

Sappho’s work has impact on later poems. Sophocles’ work has influence on development of drama. both writers and their works has definitely enlarged my knowledge about western literature culture.
