Here are some closing thoughts on this subject. I have two children of my own, and for me personally, strabismus surgery would be the last possible option I would consider. I would only consider surgery if all other treatments options were attempted and were not successful.

As previously mentioned, I would only consider allowing the surgery to be performed on my child after the age of 3 to avoid the potential problems in language and cognitive development and learning associated with anesthesia in young children. As is the case for all major surgery, if it is avoidable, then it is better not to operate.

Every year more and more optometrists are providing behavioral optometric vision therapy in their own clinics. Currently, there are also some enlightened ophthalmological clinics which employ optometrists who specialize in optometric vision therapy as part of their rehabilitative team.

My hope is that in the not too distant future all optometrists and all ophthalmologists will work together as a team, just like our two eyes work together as a team.

Ultimately, we should all want the same thing, the best possible treatment for optimal recovery of sight and binocularity for all patients.
