Amazon recently added the ability to unlock smart locks using Alexa. Here’s how to enable the feature and how it works.

Previously, you’ve only been able to lock doors using Alexa, as unlocking them using your voice was considered a security risk. However, Amazon was able to find a way around that by implementing a voice code that you have to say in order to confirm any unlocking action.

To start, fire up the Alexa app, and then tap the menu button in the top left corner of the screen.

Select “Smart Home” from the menu.

Scroll down and tap the smart lock that you want to be able to unlock with your voice.

Next, enter in a custom four-digit voice code, which you’ll need to say whenever you unlock your door with your voice. You’ll need to enter this in twice to confirm.

After that, you may need to sign in to your Amazon account.

Once that’s done, the feature will be enabled and the toggle switch will turn blue. You’re ready to go!

Now, all you have to say is “Alexa, unlock the front door” (or whatever you named your smart lock). Alexa will then ask you for your voice code. Say the code, and your door should unlock! You can also still lock your doors using your voice, and you don’t need a voice code for that.
