This sample was created based on the article “Unity 3D Multiplayer Games”, you could found a translated one from here. This article tell us how to create a multiplayer game with unity, and some ticks that you need to take care. Actually unity provides us with some features like “NetworkView” , “RPC”and ”Network.Instantiate”to create multiplayer games. NetworkView could be used to sync game object status like position, rotation and hp among all players. “RPC”just like a event, fired in one player and execute on local player and replay on remote players.
Those articles gave me a feeling that Unity will let us combine the server and client at the same time (which means a player will host the server at the same time ), this would more suitable to make a LAN multiplayer game(several players playing in a small and local network) instead of massive online multiplayer game.
Right now Unity 3D may not have a powerful multiplayer function. Some one would find anther ways to build a multiplayer game: use unity to make the client side; For the server side, we use SmartForServer, Raknet or other similar packages to build the server. Such kind of server will not hold the game playing level, but just broadcast messages and do some simple game logic calculation.
The screen shot about this demo just like following:
