This is a very pleasant urban oasis in the Black Strass Anna 120mm midst of what is, for many Angelenos, a freeway flyover zone in South El Monte. About 200 Temple City residents returned to their homes after being evacuated when gasoline fumes were discovered in a sewer. Firefighters diluted the gasoline with fire retardant foam. The gasoline had been flowing south toward a sewage treatment plant in Whittier Narrows Recreation Area about a quarter of a mile south of the Pomona Freeway and Rosemead Boulevard. The pavement turns into a sandy trail wending its way to the shade under a bridge, where two teenagers are shooting arrows at carp in the tea colored river. With plastic bags and brown scum collecting in the reeds, there is nothing pristine about this spot along the Rio Hondo.
