For Potential Students

If you are interested in pursuing a degree in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Nanjing University and would like to choose me as your supervisor for the duration of your degree and work with me on your research , then please be patient and read the following notes.

1、Before contacting me,please consider the following questions carefully.

  1. Are you interested in my current research direction (see my recent papers as well as my research group’s homepage)? Research can be fraught with frustration and can be painful without a high level of interest.
  2. How do you plan for your future? What I do is more cutting-edge research topics, and the focus is not on technologies that are mature enough to enter industry (or to enter industry immediately). Basic, cutting-edge research work is essential to any country or society, but no country or society needs a large number of people working on it. It may be more appropriate for the students I supervise to take up positions in universities, research institutes, or research organizations of large companies after graduation. Thus, if you expect to work in industry in the future (e.g., for a general company), the experience of pursuing a degree under my supervision may not be of much help to you.
  3. Do you have a large financial burden? Since I do all research rather than engineering topics, the research stipend I can provide is very limited, and probably all your income is only enough to support your own basic living. Having to worry about making ends meet while devoting yourself to research is basically impossible for regular people. Therefore, if you have a larger financial burden, entering my research group may not be a good option.

2、Due to limited energy and mentoring capacity, I am unable to recruit too many students. I usually recruit 1-2 PhD students and 2-3 MS students per year. Because far more students contact me each year than I can accept, you may face tougher competition (there are rumors that I only admit guaranteed students, which is definitely a rumor, and students I consider to have research potential may not always excel under the current general evaluation system). Based on the current situation, it is recommended that you contact me at least a year in advance. For example, if you plan to enroll in Fall 2008, you should probably start applying in May 2007.

3、If you are planning to apply for a master’s degree, then I may have to examine you a little more thoroughly than if you were applying only for a master’s degree. In general, I recommend that you apply for the MS first, and then submit an application for the PhD if you still wish to have me as your supervisor for the PhD after a period (one to two years) of research with me. Pursuing a PhD under my supervision usually means that you wish to pursue academia as a career, and I recommend that you make such a major decision only after you have some idea of what an academic career and research work with me will be like.

4、Excellent undergraduate grades (especially in math classes) will have a better impact when I choose future master students. In general, you should ideally have a good foundation in mathematics, good programming skills (MATLAB, JAVA, C/C++), and a good command of English (able to read specialized literature with less difficulty). However, the above requirements are not absolute and, in fact, the most important thing is that I think you have good research potential (unfortunately, it is difficult for me to give a specific description of this).

5、Research background and malleability will have a decisive impact when I select future PhD students. In general, it is desirable that you have already been deeply involved in research, have a clear understanding of the field, have a good publication record, are able to write papers in English more fluently, and are more comfortable making research presentations. However, the above requirements are not absolute, especially as your previous research area does not necessarily have to be the same as mine, but in any case it is desirable that you have a clearer understanding of the research work you are likely to undertake under my supervision.
