《哈利波特与魔法石》英文版读书笔记：目光实体化

在我小学的时候，我有幸接触到了哈利波特系列小说。后来陆续陆续读完了全部七本。再后来重新阅读了一遍。

众所周知，阅读英文技术文档是诸位程序员的一个必备技能。我在休闲时间阅读哈利波特的英文原著，正是基于这个原因。

在《哈利波特与魔法石》读完一半之后，我写下此文。

1 fix + stare

先来看一段文字：

“Yeh don’ know… yeh don’ know…” Hagrid ran his fingers through his hair, fixing Harry with a bewildered stare.(chapter 4)

这段话用fixing Harry with a bewildered stare描述Hagrid的目光。

人民文学出版社的译文是这样的：

“哦，你不知道……你不知道……”他用手指拢了拢头发，用困惑不解的目光盯着哈利。

在这里，fix的含义应该是：fasten (something) securely in a particular place or position。

所以：这是一个很生动的描述：Hagrid的目光像是有力量一样，将Harrry定住（fix)了一样。

我将这种用法（fix + stare）称之为目光实体化。

这种用法在小说中经常能够看到：

Harry在对角巷遇到了卖他魔杖的Ollivander(奥利凡德)先生。

“Sorry,” said Harry, “but what’s curious?”
Mr. Ollivander fixed Harry with his pale stare.（chapter 5）

2 eyes + fixed

还有一种目光实体化的用法就是eyes + fixed。

He’d never been more nervous, never, not even when he’d had to take a school report home to the Dursleys saying that he’d somehow turned his teacher’s wig blue. He kept his eyes fixed on the door. （chpater 7)

Harry在分院仪式前很紧张，He kept his eyes fixed on the door。显然，fixed on the door的是目光，不是眼睛。在这里，目光也实体化了。

下面这段描述易形成猫的麦格教授的文字也是如此。

It was sitting as still as a statue, its eyes fixed unblinkingly on the far corner of Privet Drive.（chapter 1)

更多的例子

Snape was in the middle of the stands opposite them. He had his eyes fixed on Harry and was muttering nonstop under his breath.
