For the last 8 months, I’ve taught at a bootcamp for UX/UI Design at Flatiron School. I’ve also been a hiring manager of junior designers for years, so I’ve seen the impact bootcamps have from both sides.

What is a bootcamp?

A number of companies offer immersive training courses in tech jobs. They are known as bootcamps because they accelerate learning, taking students from beginner level to qualified for a job in weeks, rather than years.

Let’s examine why bootcamps exist.

Tech job opportunities are growing and tech changes all the time. Universities struggle to offer courses teaching the skills required and keep those courses up to date. In the university teaching model, lecturers publish research and work mainly within academia. Yet tech job requirements are constantly re-defined by those working in industry.

What people expect from a designer now is different to 5 years ago and without working in the field, it’s impossible to keep up. That’s why bootcamps employ industry practitioners like me as teachers. They bring recent experience of real life design challenges to their teaching.

Where they are able to offer relevant degrees, universities are now prohibitively expensive for many. In England university fees can now reach up to £9,250 per year, leaving graduates with sizeable debt and no guarantee of a job at the end. Obviously this situation is much more pronounced in the US where many bootcamps originate. People need faster, cheaper ways to learn new skills.

That’s not to say that university courses aren’t still a great option for some, but times have changed and we need more options. Bootcamps offer flexible learning such as online and part-time options, with a higher chance of a well-paid job after. This widens access to tech professions.

Whether you have a degree or not, the job market is competitive. Employer-run training schemes, such as graduate schemes for design, are few and far between. Employers expect practical experience and a portfolio of case studies, which are difficult things for those looking to get their first design job or to change careers.

Bootcamps teach students how to work on projects and follow a process in workplace environments. At Flatiron School, students solve different design challenges leading up to a real client project. This prepares them for the realities of design work where briefs can be fuzzy and users difficult to recruit.

Team work is a huge part of the learning. It’s common for bootcamps to help students work through the phases of team development, resolving conflict and working with personality differences to get the job done. All this is very practical learning, the types of competencies employers look for when hiring.

It’s certainly not the case that all bootcamp graduates are inexperienced. One of the best things bootcamps offer is a path to career change. I’ve taught former architects, soldiers, and even MDs who are changing careers to become designers. Accelerated learning lets them integrate what they already know about business, creativity, idea generation and collaboration with the latest in user-centred design.

Like many of my peers, this was a worry I had when bootcamps first emerged. Senior practitioners are often concerned by claims you can learn a profession in a short time period. Is there depth behind the shiny portfolios? Do bootcamp graduates compete with seniors for the same roles?

Firstly, we should value both newcomers and veterans in any industry and there should be roles for both. The best teams I’ve worked in had a blend of backgrounds, breadth and depth of experience.

Secondly, it’s important to examine the length and curriculum of bootcamps. Ours for example is 24 weeks long and covers many facets of UX and UI design. Students specialise in one of these, honing the techniques and software usage repeatedly in multiple projects. It’s an intensive and rigorous training scheme.

Many claim that designers still need to learn over time on the job, which I agree with. Graduating from a bootcamp is a little like passing your driver’s license. You’ve trained enough to get behind the wheel but each time you drive, you’ll be encountering new scenarios and adding to your knowledge. That’s ok, in fact that’s professional development.

This is a new model of education. Most bootcamps are still working on how to offer consistent experiences. Staff turnover can be high, which is partly due to teachers also being industry practitioners. Scaling can be tough. And delivering training online is changing all the time as we find new ways of engaging people remotely.

But despite all this, bootcamps are delivering value by filling gaps in traditional education with practical and accessible learning. In time, hopefully they will move from the bootcamp label to simply being alternative education.
