I was always interested in design, but had only done research. Two-ish years ago, I decided to make the leap and do a career switch!

Two years ago, I was working as a Museum Evaluator with a background in child development, education, psychology, and most importantly, was focused on the academic research track for some time. After having made this transition, I realize now how incredibly important my previous experiences were — and how this unique approach helped me land a real UX Research role.

Here are some starting points on how to begin that transition whether you’re in the academic world or in a tangentially related field:

(1. Treat this transition like a research project)

Establish several research questions: What is a UX Researcher? What skills are required and expected of a UX Researcher? How did folks get into UX Research? To what extent is UX Research the right fit for me?

Then start collecting data.

(2. Read articles and begin picking up on the lingo)

I’m a big reader and a very meticulous researcher, so I approached this research project like I would with any — beginning with a literature review (tip: don’t use the word “literature review” in the UX world).

I read Neilson Norman articles. Medium articles. Linkedin articles. Read and begin making note of the type of work and lingo associated with this world. It comes in handy later.

(3. Network. Network. Network.)

Reach out to graduates of your programs that have gone into UX. Read articles on Medium and take your shot to reach out over Linkedin. The important part is to keep the “data collection” going.

I actually discovered the field of UX research through talking to alumni when I began my job search in grad school.

Pay attention to how they talk about their experiences, how they got there, and what they do on a day-to-day basis. Through these conversations, you will pick up tips, inspiration, and most importantly, vocabulary.

You are essentially conducting in-person interviews.

(4. Attend a UX workshop, course, or professional event)

I attended a General Assembly UX Design one day workshop and took meticulous notes. This workshop, though short, was incredibly exciting and it put all the lingo and vocabulary I’ve gathered in context.

You’re doing some pseudo-version of ethnography.

(5. Synthesize and pull it all together in your application)

Now that you’ve gathered all your data from literature reviews, in-person interviews, and ethnography, put it all together. Put yourself in the shoes of a UX hiring manager.

(Edit your resume and cover letter using your synthesized knowledge and new vocabulary and translate your previous experiences into actionable, impactful, relevant experiences.)

Show that you know your research chops, know how to work in a team, and know how to translate insights into practical and actionable recommendations.

Some tweaking may look like this:

For example, your resume may list research projects or research assistant positions where you list “created a qualitative codebook.” Instead write, “conducted analysis and synthesis of qualitative data and presented through readouts, impacting change in X.”

If you’ve ever been in a Researcher Coordinator position, another example may look like translating “Led and coordinated randomized control trial data collection” to “Led and coordinated recruiting, scheduling, consent form signing, and data collection efforts.”

(Treating this transition like a research project will immensely give you a leg up against others who just send over a copy of their CV in the applicant pool.)

Good luck with your job search and career transition!
