Back in July, I’ve started my quest of creating a passive income design project from scratch. I’ve been documenting and measuring success, failures, and the things I’ve learned for since the start. Now, after about two months, I got my first big milestone.

I’ve been writing about design on Medium and on my website. I wrote about issues (starting) designers face and how to get past them, personal experience, and design-related best practices.

In my previous post, I wrote about getting started and taking your first steps. I’m very happy to see that things are still going on. Things are starting to pick up, actually.

I’m going to start with the great news. After about 54 days of hard work, I managed to achieve the milestone of getting my first $100 in passive design income. This has been a great motivator for me, of course.

Last month, I’ve seen an increase of 11% to a total of 13%. Only 14 months to go if things keep going like this.

If I keep going like this, the goal of getting myself an iPad Pro is about to be achieved! Only 14 months left. That’s an improvement compared to the 4 years it was going to take me if you only look at last month’s numbers.

Sadly, there’s some bad news as well. Even though I call it passive income, this income has hardly been ‘passive’. I’ve spent a lot of time setting up the website, social media accounts, and writing posts.

If you break it down into an hourly rate, this venture wouldn’t be worth it at all. What keeps me going is that a small part of that $100 was actually passive. Last month, nothing of the $18 I’ve made was passive. This month, about 10% of the $82 was passive. I’m hoping to increase that percentage even further over time.

When looking at the key performance indicators, I’ve seen some great improvements compared to the previous point-of-measurement. Here’s how things stand.

I am really happy with the increase in mailing list subscribers and monthly website visitors. They have been increasing steadily for weeks. I believe this has caused an increase in revenue as well. More people saw my content, more people subscribed, and more people came back to read more. I’m happy to see this result.

This is a popular question. Numerous posts have been written about increasing the number of subscribers on your mailing list. Of all the suggestions that have been made, I must say that ‘content upgrades’ have worked best for me. This is when you provide a little extra at the end of your post in exchange for a reader’s email address.

In my case, my most popular content upgrades are a UX portfolio review and checklist on my ‘everything you need to know when creating your UX portfolio’ post. About 40% of my subscribers joined this way.

To determine where you can best implement content upgrades, you first have to take a look at which of your posts is most popular. These are the posts that are in demand. Readers are really looking for answers here, so providing a content upgrade to your readers will have a higher chance of converting readers into subscribers.

Since I’m going to focus on my own website as well, I’m going to measure the number of monthly organic website visits. Over the past 30 days, 67 users have visited my website via organic search. This is the baseline of this KPI.

My goal is to increase this number to 500 users per month by the end of the year.

Looking back at just over two months of working on my passive income side project, there are a few things that stand out. Some of which you could apply right away to help you get started.

  • Rewrite some of your older posts. These posts might be forgotten and are waiting to be revived by you for new exposure. You can add new insights to your posts to increase the added value for your readers. You can also use some of the posts you might have outside of Medium. Keep in mind that you have to make significant changes to your posts for Medium to allow you to republish your posts.

  • Consistency is more important than going viral. You don’t know when your post will go viral. If you did, every post would go viral. You have to be very lucky to get yourself a viral post. Most of my posts earn me about $3–5 dollars a month. Only one or two of my posts exceeds that number. The rest stays within that number. You can do the math. The more quality posts you have, the more you’re going to make. A lot of small earnings can make you earn a lot of you add them all together.

  • Pick your publication. I’ve narrowed the number of publications I’m writing for down to about two or three. By doing this, you’ll get familiar with the time it takes to be published, the process of getting published, the type of posts the publication likes, and the people that run the publication. This will help you get your posts to a bigger audience in less time.

For example, the niche I’m in is the design niche. I could make it even narrower by focussing just on UX design. If you do that, I think you’re going to leave some good potential posts out. Instead, you could write about design-related topics as well. You could write about a designer’s view on a certain real-life event, movies, or something else entirely. I’m sure you have something interesting to say about more than just design!

An example of the final point I made here is my post on the success of Fall Guys, a game on PC and PS4. It has been one of my more popular posts this month, even though it is not entirely in the design niche, but rather a games-design-niche-collaboration.

This month has also marked the first passive income I’ve made via affiliate marketing from posts I’ve written on design-related products outside of Medium. Another plus is that some of these pages rank pretty well on Google, which helps to get things started on my website.

About 5% of this month’s passive income came via affiliate marketing. The other 95% came via the Medium Partner Programme.

From now on, I’m going to focus on providing design insights on Medium, as well as on my publication The Designer’s Toolbox, and on my website.

I wrote just over two posts per week in July, which was my goal. I also created multiple content upgrades, as I’ve stated previously. It has brought me a big increase in mailing list subscribers. I decided not to translate any more of my Dutch content to English for now as that content is more about my portfolio than it is relevant for my Medium posts. That was the third item on my list.

Next steps for the rest of August and September

At the time of this writing, August is well on its way so my to-do list will focus on the remainder of August and the entire month of September. That’s about 6 weeks so I am going to set some ambitious goals. I’ve returned from a two-week vacation so I am ready, well-rested, and motivated to pick things up again.

At the end of September, I’m aiming to be at 300 Medium followers, 100 mailing list subscribers, and 100 monthly organic website visitors. Ambitious, but doable. Let’s go for it!

Now that I’m in ‘triple digits territory’, my goal is to stay there and eventually go to ‘four digits territory’. But first, I want to be more consistent and make this side project more passive than it has been for the first two months.
