Lately, I’ve noticed a common theme across a few posts, and it’s helped me to make sense of things that I experience as a Junior Designer. (Maybe it’s a sign of the times, maybe we’re all becoming acutely aware of our abilities after receiving feedback or a handful of job app rejections?) Anyway, most of them have a lot to do with Imposter Syndrome. Yes, I experience that quite often and it’s partly the reason for this post. But one thing that has affected me personally over the past few months is the frustration that comes with not being able to produce designs that match the quality of concepts I find aesthetically appealing.

I know, it’s not my job as a UXer to “make things pretty,” contrary to popular belief. There is, however, an expectation for a product to not only be functional and usable but to also keep the user from audibly gasping and looking away at the sight of the page. NPR host Ira Glass calls this gap between our taste and talent, the Taste Gap.

He says, “Nobody tells this to people who are beginners. I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap…”

I would constantly compare my work to that of my peers’ during my design course at General Assembly. I couldn’t understand why my wireframes and sketches didn’t look like her wireframes and sketches. I distinctly remember talking to one of my instructors about this and asked how to make my designs better. She suggested looking at the work of apps or websites that I really enjoyed using and remake them.

A recent thread from Twitter’s CDO Dantley Davis suggested something similar- copy inspiring work and remix them with different design decisions to build not only your eye for detail but also your portfolio.

Glass’s advice? “It’s only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions.”

So, if you’re feeling a sense of inadequacy, you’re not alone. It can be daunting. It can be frustrating. But we wouldn’t be in this profession if we were completely incapable of producing great work that we’re passionate about- it just takes time. Something that immediately makes me feel better is looking at my designs from a year ago vs. now and seeing all of that amazing growth. Just imagine the progress a year from today! If you’re like me (or just find yourself in that moment of frustration) give yourself a little grace and easy knowing that the solution is pretty simple- just keep going!
