School of Computing Science Profile
The School of Computing Science is one of the longest established in the UK, and has a reputation built up over more than 50 years. Computing Science at Newcastle has an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is the UK’s official survey of research quality in universities and higher education colleges. In the 2008 RAE, 70% of our research was classed as world leading or internationally excellent, with research strengths in a number of fields. These include: eScience, distributed systems, bioinformatics, security, human–computer interaction (including computer graphics), and theoretical computing science.
Our current portfolio of research projects is worth over £10M and is currently clustered in six groups:
• biology,
• concurrent asynchronous systems;
• dependability;
• human–computer interaction;
• system modelling and simulation;
• and systems.
All our groups are supported by, and in many cases lead, large multisite national and international projects involving the active engagement of both industry and other research disciplines. Newcastle University research has made a longstanding contribution to industry, most recently working with Microsoft and Yahoo to improve email security.
This feeds into our teaching and ensures that our degree programmes incorporate the very latest developments in computing.
Our undergraduate degrees include:
BSc Computing Science
BSc Computing Science (Bioinformatics)
BSc Computing Science (Games and Virtual Environments)
BSc Computing Science (Network Systems and Internet Technologies)
BSc Computing Science (Software Engineering)
4 year MComp programmes are also available.
Our taught Masters degrees include
MSc Computing Science
MSc Advanced Computer Science
MSc Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology
MSc Computer Security and Resilience

Naturally, you will have access to the very latest computing facilities, including our modern dedicated teaching labs. Our students also benefit from a large number of networked computer systems and specialist pieces of research equipment for research projects, such as our immersive virtual reality suite, and motion capture facilities and 3D printing. We are also able to provide state-of-the-art video conferencing, and technologies for conference and collaborative learning.
All our degrees are accredited by the British Computer Society, which exempts you from further examinations if you decide to apply for Chartered Engineer status after graduating. For further information visit www.bcs.org.
