6.Consider a classical 10 Mbs Ethernet. Suppose we require that the network
operate at an efficiency of at least 80% when all packets have minimum length (ignore the
preamble and flag, when making this calculation). Approximately what is the largest
propagation delay that is consistent with this requirement?

11.
Consider two nodes, A and B, that use the slotted ALOHA protocol to content for a
channel. Suppose node A has more data to transmit than node B, and node A’s
retransmission probability pA is greater than node B’s probability pB.
a. Provide a formula for node A’s average throughput (i.e. probability
of successful transmission for a given slot). What is the total efficiency of the
protocol with these two nodes?
b. If pA = 2pB, is node A’s average throughput twice as large as that of node B?
Why or why not? If not, how can you choose pA and pB to make that happen?
c. In general, suppose there are N nodes, among which node A has
retransmission probability 2p and all other nodes have retransmission
probability p. Provide expressions to compute the average throughput of
node A and of any other node.

  1. Suppose the three departmental switches in Figure 5.15 are replaced by hubs. All links are 100 Mbps.
We can say that each departmental is a separated domain that can have maximum throughput of 100 Mbps. The links that connect the web server and the mail server has a maximum throughput of 100 Mbps. So, if the three collision domains and the web server and mail server send out data at their maximum possible rates of 100 Mbps each, a maximum total aggregate throughput of 500 Mbps can be achieved among the 14 end systems.

  2. The result K=4 corresponds to a delay of how many seconds on a 10Mbps Ethernet?
    It waits 204.8 microseconds.(4*512/10mbps)

  3. The diagram below shows two subnets connected by a router. For each host and
router port, the IP address and MAC address (abbreviated) are shown. Initially the ARP
tables of the hosts and router are empty. Suppose A sends a packet to B. Show the contents
of the ARP tables after the packet reaches B.

  1. Suppose the IEEE 802.11 RTS and CTS frames were as long as the standard DATA and ACK frames. Would there be any advantage to using the CTS and RTS frames? Why or why not?
No, there wouldn’t be any advantage. Suppose there are two stations that want to transmitat the sometime and they both use RTS/CTS.If the RTS frame is as long as a DATA frames, the channel would be wasted for as long as it would have been wasted fortwo colliding DATA frames. Thus, the RTS/CTS exchange is only useful when the RTS/CTS frames are significantly smaller than the DATA frames.
