例题1:

Some people think that the most important function of music is to help people relax.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

范文:

Many believe that music serves primarily as a means of relaxation while others think it is more than that. I am in agreement with the former as there are other purposes for music but they can all be roughly defined as ways of relaxing.

Those who feel music is more than just relaxation point out its other stated uses. For example, many people listen to music in more active settings, such as in night clubs, and dance along. In difficult emotional periods, including after a bad breakup or the loss of a loved one, some individuals turn to music to cope or lift up their spirits. There are also those who view music as an art form no different from literature, painting, and poetry. For them, music serves the myriad purposes of artistic appreciation that include offering insights into life and the artistic expression of others.

Nonetheless, the reasons detailed above can all be generally categorised as forms of relaxation and the most common purpose of music is unadorned enjoyment. People relax in different ways and that can include dancing, connecting with music emotionally or enjoying art. The majority of people, however, simply listen to music throughout the day as a way of escaping from the pressures and demands of work and family. Studies have shown that listening to music regularly can reduce blood pressure and ease the burdens that modern life places on mental health. This is the reason why workers, students, and parents gravitate towards music, in addition to other kinds of light entertainment, at the end of a long day and explains the enduring success of the industry.

In conclusion, music is mainly for relaxation, though this takes on different variations depending on the person in question. This desire to relax is part of a shared humanity that unites all peoples.

例题2:

Many people use social media every day to get in touch with other people and news events.

Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Social media are gaining increasing popularity, through which individuals communicate with others and obtain news information on a daily basis. Personally, I am inclined to the view that the merits of this prevail over the drawbacks.

The primary benefit of people's everyday exposure to social media is that they can maintain a sound relationship with others. Young people attending university in another city or country can keep in touch with their family and friends, conveniently sharing their lives with each other. Working adults can easily communicate with their clients, which eventually contributes to their work performance.

Another major advantage is that people can understand what is happening across their country or over the globe in a timely fashion. In the past, the public could hear about the world one or two days after the events had happened as the technology then was under-developed. In contrast, news applications on electronic devices today can automatically send users instant messages, making it possible for them to know about current affairs without waiting.

However, the disadvantages of people being exposed to social media daily cannot be ignored, the most obvious of which is that their physical health can be threatened. If they spend an excessive amount of time on social media, chatting and keeping up with the news, they may lead a sedentary life, lacking proper exercise. In the end, they are likely to suffer from eye fatigue, headaches, and backaches.

In conclusion, I reiterate that there are more positive influences than negative ones if people use social media in their everyday lives to talk to people and access news coverage. After all, they can maintain good relationships with others and know about the world without delay. Nevertheless, I understand that using social media every day can damage their fitness. Therefore, I suggest parents control their offspring's screen time and adults participate in various activities.

例题3:

In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people say an ageing population creates problems for governments. Other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people. To what extent do the advantages of having an ageing population outweigh the disadvantages?

范文:

The global trend of increasing life expectancy leads to a rise in the population of the elderly in many countries. While some people argue that this creates challenges for the government, others believe that there are significant upsides to a society with more elderly people. Personally, I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages for several reasons.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that a growing elderly population can cause difficulties such as increasing demand for healthcare services, social security, and pension funds. For example, countries like Japan and Italy have faced significant financial burdens due to their aging populations. Additionally, a higher retirement rate among elderly people can result in a shortage of active and healthy workers, which can hinder economic growth.

On the other hand, older individuals bring various benefits. Firstly, the increase in the aging population indicates advancements in healthcare systems and improvements in living standards. Longer life expectancy is a testament to medical progress and better access to healthcare services. Moreover, the elderly contribute valuable experience, wisdom, and diverse skills to society. They can serve as mentors and pass down their precious knowledge to younger generations. Furthermore, older citizens may have accumulated savings and assets during their lifetime, providing a strong foundation for the next generation to build upon and develop various skills.

In conclusion, the advantages of having an elderly population, such as a seasoned and experienced workforce, as well as financial stability, outweigh the drawbacks. Therefore, the presence of older individuals in society should be viewed as a positive factor.

例题4:

In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before, some people say an ageing population creates problems for governments, other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people. To what extent do the advantages of having an ageing population outweigh the disadvantages?

范文:

The global increase in life expectancy has led to a burgeoning elderly population in numerous countries. While some argue that this demographic shift poses significant challenges for governments, others contend that the presence of a larger elderly population offers certain benefits to society. In my opinion, although an ageing population does present certain challenges for governments, the benefits of a society with more elderly individuals cannot be overlooked.

To begin with, an ageing population strains healthcare systems and social services as people require more medical attention and long-term care due to chronic conditions and age-related diseases. Consequently, governments must allocate substantial resources, potentially limiting funding for other crucial sectors such as education or infrastructure. Additionally, an ageing population may reduce the workforce, leading to labor shortages and skills gaps as young people enter the job market in fewer numbers and older workers retire, potentially hindering economic growth and innovation.

On the other hand, an ageing population offers several benefits to society. Firstly, older individuals' wisdom and experience can be invaluable in mentorship, education, and community development. Additionally, an ageing population promotes intergenerational cohesion and collaboration, fostering understanding and empathy between age groups. This leads to a more tolerant, inclusive society, positively impacting various social issues, such as reducing ageism and enhancing support networks for the elderly.

In conclusion, the advantages of having an ageing population do not necessarily tip the scales against the disadvantages, but they should be recognized and utilized to create a more harmonious and supportive society. By acknowledging the challenges and leveraging the benefits, we can collectively ensure a brighter future for all generations.

2.Discuss both views and give your own opinion

写作思路:

2段:陈述一边观点+解释/举例

3段:陈述另一边观点+解释/举例

4段:

折中观点:重申观点(两方的重要性)+提出平衡方案

偏向一方:重申观点+强调一方重要性

例题1:

Some people believe that it is more important to protect the natural environment than to build new housing developments. Others argue that building new homes is necessary to accommodate growing populations. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

范文:

The debate surrounding the balance between protecting the natural environment and building new housing developments has been a point of contention for many. Some argue that the environment should be prioritized, while others believe that new housing is necessary to accommodate the growing population. Both sides present compelling arguments, but in my view, a balanced approach is essential to address both the need for sustainable environmental preservation and the growing demand for housing.

On one side of the debate, the preservation of the natural environment is seen as critical for the long-term survival of both humans and wildlife. Many believe that protecting forests, wetlands, and other natural areas should take precedence over urban expansion. Deforestation, for example, not only threatens wildlife habitats but also accelerates climate change by releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Additionally, maintaining natural spaces contributes to human well-being by providing areas for recreation, improving air quality, and preventing urban heat islands. These environmental benefits are invaluable, and prioritizing conservation ensures that future generations will have access to clean air, water, and healthy ecosystems.

On the other hand, there is a strong argument in favor of building new housing to accommodate the growing global population. Rapid population growth in many parts of the world has led to overcrowded living conditions, particularly in urban areas. The lack of adequate housing can lead to slums, poor sanitation, and social unrest. Furthermore, new housing developments can drive economic growth by creating jobs in construction, boosting the real estate market, and increasing local tax revenues. In cities where the population is expanding rapidly, such as in parts of Asia and Africa, building more homes becomes essential to ensure people have access to proper living conditions and to avoid social issues stemming from overcrowding.

In conclusion, both protecting the environment and providing adequate housing are important. Rather than viewing these two goals as mutually exclusive, a balanced approach is needed. Sustainable urban planning that incorporates green spaces, energy-efficient buildings, and the reuse of existing infrastructure can allow for the expansion of cities without compromising the health of the environment. By taking a thoughtful and balanced approach, we can meet the needs of both the growing population and the planet.

例题2:

Some people think that the government should strictly control the supply of fresh water, while others think we can use as much water as we want. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

范文:

Fresh water is one of the most essential resources for human survival, yet it is becoming increasingly scarce in many parts of the world. While some believe that the government should impose strict controls over water usage, others feel individuals should have the freedom to consume it without limitation. This essay will examine both perspectives before arguing in favour of government regulation.

Those who oppose government control often base their view on the idea of personal freedom and property rights. They argue that people who pay for water services should be entitled to use as much as they can afford. For example, farmers might require large amounts of water to irrigate crops during dry seasons, and limiting their access could harm food production and livelihoods. In addition, these individuals believe that technological innovation, such as desalination plants or water recycling, can solve scarcity issues without the need for restrictive laws.

On the other hand, supporters of strict regulation emphasise the urgent need to conserve fresh water. Natural freshwater sources, such as rivers and aquifers, are finite and can take decades or even centuries to replenish. Without careful management, overuse can lead to droughts, ecosystem collapse, and severe shortages for future generations. For instance, Cape Town in South Africa nearly ran out of water in 2018, partly due to uncontrolled consumption. By introducing quotas, tiered pricing systems, and awareness campaigns, governments can ensure that water is used efficiently and shared fairly among citizens.

In conclusion, although unlimited access may appeal to those who value individual rights, the reality of water scarcity demands careful regulation. Only through responsible government intervention can we ensure that fresh water remains available for all.

3.Is this a positive or negative development

写作思路:

开头:改写题目+个人观点

中间:主题句+解释/举例

结尾:重申观点

同类的提问方式:

Do you think this is a positive or negative trend?

例题1:

Nowadays, more people are choosing to socialise online rather than face to face. Is this a positive or negative development?

范文:

An increasing number of people meet and talk to their friends online instead of in person. In my opinion, this is a negative development which can lead to isolation, potentially harmful situations and also problems later on in life.

One serious problem that can arise from people socialising online is that it can lead to isolation. Before the internet, people would frequently go out to meet friends, for example in cafes, bars or restaurants, whereas now people prefer to stay at home alone, chatting online. As a result, people are starting to spend the majority of their time alone at home in their room without meeting others. Isolation of this kind is not healthy and can sometimes lead to depression and other issues.

Another issue is that meeting people online can be risky. In other words, people can assume fake identities online as well as hide their true characteristics. This is particularly concerning for teenagers who are impressionable and can easily be led into dangerous situations. Furthermore, as this interaction is online, parents have no way of monitoring it and protecting their children.

Finally, socialising online can end in difficulties years later as conversations and shared photos that had been forgotten reappear. This situation is currently critical for many people, again especially for teenagers who do not think carefully before posting online. That is to say, information which is put online can remain there forever and while people may share intimate communications with close friends, these words can then resurface later on leading to much embarrassment.

In conclusion, although it has become more popular for people to socialise through the internet, it has brought about too many problems for this to be considered a positive trend.

例题2:

People in many countries are spending more and more time away from their families.
Why is this happening? How does this affect people and their families?

注:这也是一个“双问题”,上一篇有讲到

范文:

The trend of individuals spending significantly less time with their families has become increasingly widespread and pronounced. I believe that this is mainly driven by career and academic endeavours and it has significant negative repercussions for both families and individuals.

One of the primary reasons for this phenomenon is the demanding and competitive nature of our modern professional lives. Due to this people find themselves working longer hours, to satisfy the requirements of their superiors and get ahead in their careers. In addition, the technology of today has made it possible to stay connected 24/7, and this often blurs the lines between work and personal life, leading to extended work hours. The ease of international travel for work and study has also significantly contributed to more people spending less time with their families. With the rise of global job and study opportunities, many relocate to different countries. For instance, the pursuit of higher education often requires studying in distant locations, causing young adults to spend years away from their families.

This increasing separation from family has profound negative effects on both individuals and families. On a personal level, a long absence from family can lead to feelings of isolation and stress, especially for young students who have never been away from home before. In terms of how this trend affects families, especially those with young children, lack of contact with a family member can impact emotional bonding and family dynamics. In the long run this could potentially cause a sense of detachment between certain family members that could be difficult to repair.

In conclusion, the growing trend of spending time away from family is driven by mainly professional and educational commitments. While this trend offers opportunities for professional growth and development, it challenges the traditional family structure and the emotional well-being of those separated from their loved ones.
