positive definite
When a symmetric matrix A A has one of these five properties, it has them all and is positive definite:
- all n eigenvalue are positive.
- all n principal minors(n upper left determinants) are positive.
- all n pivots are positive.
- xTAx x T A x is positive except when x=0 x = 0 (this is usually the definition of positive definiteness and the energy-based definition).
- A A equals for a matrix R R with independent columns.
Let us prove the fifth rule. If , then
xTAx====≥xTRTRx(xTRT)Rx(Rx)TRx∥Rx∥0 x T A x = x T R T R x = ( x T R T ) R x = ( R x ) T R x = ‖ R x ‖ ≥ 0
And the columns of R R are also independent, so
