 Q. Can I do everything in the IDE that I can do from the command line?

A. Yes, all the tasks you are able to perform using the command line are now also supported directly from the graphical IDE, including all tasks related to downloading your operating system image to a target device.

 Q. Can I still use the command line when I am using Platform Builder 3.0?

A. Yes, but we recommend that you use the IDE, because it automates many tasks, such as setting environment variables.

 Q. Can I migrate my older platform created with Platform Builder 2.12 or Platform Builder 3.0 to Platform Builder with Windows CE .NET?

A. Yes, and Microsoft has made the migration as effortless as possible.

 Q. Can I convert a Platform Builder 2.12 workspace to a Platform Builder 3.0 workspace?

A. Yes, by using the Platform Conversion feature. You will be prompted to convert a Platform Builder 2.12 workspace when it is opened using Platform Builder 3.0.

 Q. Can an Export SDK created with Platform Builder 2.12 be used with eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0?

A. Yes, Platform Builder's 2.12 Export SDKs are compatible with eMbedded Visual Tools.

 Q. What are Microsoft's plans for the next version of Windows CE and Platform Builder?

A. The embedded marketplace is continuously evolving and embedded devices are becoming more integrated with PC systems. Highly modular, new generation devices based on Windows CE have moved into many markets and are now serving strategically important roles in those businesses. Microsoft is currently assessing our customers' needs and reviewing their requests for new-generation devices so that Windows CE and Platform Builder can provide all the tools and technologies our customers need to develop world-class embedded devices and applications.

 Q. Can you use Platform Builder to build software applications?

A. Platform Builder allows for the creation of custom components for your platform and eMbedded Visual Tools, now included with Platform Builder, allows the creation of software applications.

Microsoft eMbedded Visual Tools includes Microsoft eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0 and Microsoft eMbedded Visual C++ 3.0 development systems, which are optimized for embedded application development. Application developers can use these tools to create applications for platforms created with Platform Builder, versions 2.12 and 3.0.

 Q. How can I get the source code for Platform Builder 3.0 to do kernel debugging?


A. In order to use the Window CE 3.0 Source Code, you must to be the owner of a Platform Builder Full Version or Platform Builder Evaluation Edition.

 Q. How is Platform Builder related to the eMbedded Visual Tools?

A. Platform Builder delivers all the tools you need to rapidly build a Windows CE-based embedded system. Once you have created a platform, you can use Platform Builder to create an Export SDK with device-specific Win32® APIs based on your platform. Application developers can then use your SDK in conjunction with the eMbedded Visual Tools to create applications for your platform.

A. Microsoft Platform Builder 3.0 delivers all the tools developers need to rapidly build Microsoft Windows® CE-based embedded systems. Platform Builder's integrated development environment (IDE) enables developers to configure, build, and debug a new generation of highly modular designs that combine the flexibility and reliability of embedded systems with the power of Windows and the Web. New IDE features allow developers to quickly and easily build customized solutions. These features include:

  • Improved target-host integration and connectivity for faster embedded development.
  • Advanced system-level debugging support, including hardware-assisted and source-level debugging.
  • An improved extensibility model for directly integrating additional microprocessor architectures and third-party tools.

Platform Builder now also includes the eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0™, which offers versions of the award-winning Microsoft Visual Basic® and Microsoft Visual C++® development systems that have been optimized for embedded application development.
