Business collocation(2018/09/13)

Introduction

In this lesson ,we will  be learning collocations with the word " desk" that are used in the business world.Collocations are words that native speakers put together naturally because they grow up alway hearing them together.To an ESL student  these combinations(组合) might not sound nutural.The meaning of separate words might not match up but together they create a new meaning.

Vocabulary

supplies--things necessary for daily life or a paticular purpose.

reception--a particular type of welcome for someone,or a particular type of reaction to their ideas,work etc.

paperwork--work such as writting letters or reports,whitch must be done but is not very interesting.

department--one of the group of people  who work together in a perticular part of a large organization.

humorous-funny and enjoyable.

Desk tidy

A desk tidy is something you can put your pens and other office supplies in,this way they are on your desk but still in a container.

eg:I got a desk tidy from my boss on my first day of work.

Desk job

Desk jod is a job where you sit behind a desk most of the day  to do your job

eg:He was a soldier in the field after he got hurt he got a desk job with the army.

Front desk

We refer to the front desk when we talk about the palce(usually a desk) where you can go for information about a company,hotel,etc from the person working there.

eg:We need someone with experience in hotel reception to work at our front desk and help the clients.

Writing desk

A writing desk is a special desk with space for paper ,pens etc.made specially to do paperwork at.

eg:we need to get a writing desk for the mail(邮件，首发) room.

City desk

The word city desk refers to a certain department of a newspaper but has a different meaning in American English and British English.Americans use city desk to refers to the department of local news for the new paper,while it refers to the financial news department for the british.

eg:I work for a newspaper at the city desk

Desk jockey

This is a term we usually use in a humorous way.to be funny,Someone who has a desk job is a desk jockey.

eg:Hey buddy!,congratulations on the promotion!Now that you are a desk jockey you must be careful not to get fat.

Collocation pratice

1.I think working in the city desk department must be very boring.

2.I am alway looking for my pen ,I need a desk tidy.

3.Before email  everyone used to have a writing desk to write their letters at.

4.Having a desk job make you a desk jockey.

5.You can go to the front desk for help.

6.I would hate having a desk job and spending my whole day in an office.
