The Shawshank Redemption-12

Making a person up!

  • Andy was as good as his word(说到做到). He wrote two letters a week instead of one.

  • In 1959, the state senate(参议院) finally clued in to the fact they couldn’t buy him off(收买) with just a $200 check. Appropriations Committee voted an annual payment of $500 just to shut him up.(让他闭嘴)

  • And you’d be amazed how far Andy could stretch(展开) it. He made deals with book clubs, charity groups. He bought remaindered books by the pound.

  • You know what that’s about? You’d like it. It’s about a prison break.

  • No free ride, but rather a genuine progressive(进步的) advance, in corrections and rehabilitation. Our inmates(同牢狱中人), properly supervised(监督), will be put to work(投入使用) outside these walls, performing all manner of public service.

  • The rest of us did our best to pitch in(出一份力) when and where we could.

  • That was also the year Warden Norton instituted his famous “Inside Out” program. You may remember reading about it. It made all the papers and got his picture in Look magazine.

  • These men can learn the value of an honest day’s labor while providing a valuable service to the community, and at a bare minimum of expense to Mr. and Mrs. John Q Taxpayer.(提供社会服务履行纳税人的职责)

  • Of course, Norton failed to mention to the press(跟媒体提) that “bare minimum of expense” is a fairly loose term(模糊的说法). There are 100 different ways to skim off the top(瞒天过海). Men, materials, you name it. And oh my Lord, how the money rolled in!(涌进来)

  • This keeps up, you gonna put me out of business. This pool of slave labor you got, you can underbid any contractor in town.

  • We’re providing a valuable community service here.

  • That’s fine for the papers, but I’ve got a family to feed. Sam, Sam, we go back a long way.(看在我们认识这么久的份上)

  • I need this new highway contract. I don’t get it, and I go under(破产). That’s a fact. You taste some of this fine pie, my missus made especially for you. You think about that.

  • Ned, I wouldn’t worry too much about this contract. Seems to me, I’ve already got my boys committed elsewhere. You be sure and thank Maisie for this fine pie.

  • And behind every shady deal(肮脏的交易), behind every dollar earned, there was Andy, keeping the books.

  • Get my stuff down the laundry. Two suits for dry-clean,

  • He’s got his fingers in a lot of pies, from what I hear.

  • What you hear isn’t half of it(只是一小部分). He’s got scams(诡计) you haven’t even dreamed of. Kickbacks(回扣) on his kickbacks. It’s a river of dirty money running through this place.

  • They ever catch on(明白), you know, he’s gonna wind up(告终) in here wearing a number himself.

  • Oh, really, I thought you had a little more faith(有信心) in me than that.

  • He’s a phantom(幽灵), an apparition. Second cousin to Harvey the rabbit. I conjured him out of thin air. He doesn’t exist, except on paper.

  • Andy, you can’t just make a person up.

  • Oh sure you can, you know how the system works, where the cracks(漏洞) are. It’s amazing what you can accomplish by mail. Mr. Stevens has a birth certificate, driver’s license, social security number.

  • Governor’s gonna be there. Want the rest of this? Woman can’t bake worth shit.

  • Cleaner. By time Norton retires, I’ll have made him a millionaire.

  • You know, the funny thing is on the outside, I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.
