As reported by Gamasutra, a new study by research firm NPD Group claims that more Americans are gaming than going out to the movies.
The study is titled "Entertainment Trends in America," and it claims that 63% of Americans played a game in the last six months, while only 53% have gone out to see a movie in the same time period.
According to NPD, the average gamer spent just over $38 per month on "all types of gaming content" in the three months leading up to March this year.
The study also found that 31% of gamers bought a console or handheld game in the last 12 months.
Music is still the most popular form of entertainment, claims NPD. The study reports that 94% of Americans listened to music over that time period, by comparison.
Gamers are accessing content in new ways, the study claims. 31% played a game on a gaming website, 12% on a social networking site, 19% played a game that was pre-installed on their mobile phones, while 11% purchased and downloaded a game to their phone.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier put it into perspective, stating that "Video games account for one-third of the average monthly consumer spending in the U.S. for core entertainment content, including music, video, games."
"While a portion of that share stems from the premium price of console games, we're also seeing an overall increase in the number of people participating in gaming year-over-year."
Gerald says: Games are big business, and no one knows this better than Hollywood. Big-budget action movies are commonly released with a videogame tie-in in mind, but even when that isn't in the cards you may still find advertising for these films in-game or on gaming-related websites.http://www.ffxi-gil.net
