Home networks are a hot topic. When I installed my first home LAN in the late 1980s, I was the only person on my block—and probably in the entire city—to have a home network. Today, virtually every computer and electronics store has an aisle or two devoted to home networking products.

There are three factors driving the home networking bandwagon. The first is the ever-increasing number of multiple-PC homes, thanks to a drastic drop in PC prices over the past few years. As more people bring home that second or third PC, they often wish that it were possible to share files, printers, and an Internet connection among all the computers in the home. The second factor is the rapid rise in the use of broadband home Internet connections. Broadband cable and DSL Internet connections can easily handle two or more simultaneous users, but you need a network to share the connection.

The third and most important driver for home networking is the arrival of inexpensive, reliable wireless networking equipment. Many potential network users have been put off by the difficulty and expense involved with installing the cables necessary to create a home network. Wireless networks don’t need cables at all, and this greatly reduces the effort and expense required to set up a home network.

A home network provides a simple, inexpensive way to share an Internet connection, files, and even printers among all of the computers in your home. Manufacturers have responded to the  ushrooming demand for home network products by delivering products that are inexpensive and easy to install and use.

The increasing popularity of home networks has also caught the attention of the home entertainment industry. The result is a new breed of home entertainment devices that operate over a home network.
