英语写作中“超过”“超越”exceed surpass的用法

exceed surpass都可翻译为“超过”、“超越”，exceed是中性词，可以表达正面或负面意思，而surpass 一般是褒义词，偶尔可以表达负面意思。

exceed只能用于数字、可度量的事物例如complexity复杂度、capacity容量、memory内存、bandwidth带宽、rate速率、the number of users用户数量、cost成本、overhead开销、volume容量、revenue收入等等。

surpass 用法宽的多，可用于数字、可度量事物、或不可度量事物例如scalability伸缩性、achievements成就、experience体验、capability/ability能力等等做宾语，也可以用于people人、devices设备、algorithm算法，表示优于、高于。

例如：

If the value of the signal exceeds the threshold, it will be determined to be 1. Otherwise 0.（如果信号值超过阈值，它就判定为1，否则为0。）

Or：（不严格用法）

If the signal exceeds the threshold value,……

The population of this city exceeds 1000,000.（这个城市人口超过百万。）

注意，上面例子用surpass语法没问题，但语气不对，因它们无褒义。

The rise rate surpasses 10%.（上升率超过百分之10。）

The proposed algorithm surpasses existing ones in computational complexity.（所提出的算法在计算复杂度方面超过/超越已有算法。）

It turns out that deep learning surpasses statistical learning.（已经显示出，深度学习优于统计学习。）

注意一个有用的表达：exceed expectations 和surpass expectations 都是可以的，例如：

Experiments show that the performance of the new system exceeds/surpasses expectations.（实验表明新系统的性能超出了预期。）

这个表达是不是比下面的表达更高级：

Experiments show that the performance of the new system is better than expected.
