1.1. Work
1.1.1. Do you work or are you a student?/What is your job?/What do you do?
I’m working as an algorithm engineer at Huawei Technologies Company, where I have been working for over two years. My major responsibility is to analyze and implement artificial intelligence algorithms for software applications on smartphones. For example, I have implemented algorithms of natural language processing for the voice assistant in Huawei’s smartphones.
- What does an algorithm engineer do?
An algorithm engineer implements mathmatics models into pratice to solve realistic problems.
1.1.2. Why did you choose that job?
I chose that job for two reasons. Firstly, I am enthusiastic about mathematics and programming, and I want to leverage them to create interesting applications, which is what an algorithm engineer do. Secondly, Huawei is one of the biggest IT company in China, even in the world, which offers me a great platform to put my ideas into practice.
1.1.3. Do you like your job?
Well, yes and no. My job is fulfilling, because software applications based on my algorithms have served for hundreds of millions of smarthone users and it makes me excited! However, it can be boring when I have to spend a lot of time doing data cleaning and repetitive experiments to increase the accuracy.
-
What’s the most interesting part of your job?
The most interesting part is that I can bridge the gap between algorithm theory and pratical applications. It makes me excited when I see my ideas put into pratice, solving realistic problems, and serving for millions of people. -
What’s the most difficult part of your job?
The most difficule part is to increase the accuracy of the algorithm. For most realistic problems, finding an existing algorithm as a passable solution is not hard, for example, reaching 80% accuracy. However, the requirement of accuracy is ususlly higher than that in practical applications, for example 95%. In order to meet the accuracy requirements, algorithm engineers have to collect a lot of data and do plenty of experiments to optimize their algorithms.
1.1.4. Do you miss being a student?
Yes. When I was a student, there is nothing to worry about but the exams. I had much more freedom to do what I like to do, such as learning a new skill, making a new friend, traveling to a new place, and so on. Now I have to deal with the stress from my work and family, working for most of the time to make a living.
1.1.5. Is it a popular job in your country?/Would you say it’s a good occupation?
Yes. It is mainly for two reason. Firstly it is well-paid. Since the house prices in big cities are getting higher and higher, a job with a good salary is attractive to young people who wants to settle down. Secondly, thanks to the development of internet and information technology industry, this job has a large demand these years.
1.1.6. What are your career plans for the future?
I plan to study for a doctorate in computer science in the future, which can improve my professional qualities, especially the ability to create new things. After that, I will choose to become a professor in a university or a research scientist in a big company, because I want to do something innovative, for example, create a new artificial intelligence algorithm to understand human language.
1.2. The place you live in
1.2.1. Can you describe the place you live in?/Do you live in a house or a flat?
Yes. I live in an apartment block/building. The building is about 20 floors, and I am on the second floor. It’s a modern building, and it was built about 15 years ago.
1.2.2. What scenery can you see from the window of your place?
I can see a lawn, some trees and several benches from the window. In sunny days, I can see some kids palying on the lawn and old people sitting on the benches. It’
