This is a typical example of how technology can be put to good use to convert something like a red brick — the most common and the cheapest building material which doesn’t do much apart from being used for construction purposes can be re-fashioned as energy storage devices. At least that’s what Chemists at Washington University, St. Louis have proposed in a proof of concept study.
Researchers showed how they can convert ordinary red bricks into a type of energy storage device called a supercapacitor. These smart bricks are coated with a conductive polymer called PEDOT — made up of nanofibers that get absorbed in the porous structure of the bricks, eventually turning the whole brick into “an ion sponge” that conducts and stores energy.
“PEDOT-coated bricks are ideal building blocks that can provide power to emergency lighting. We envision that this could be a reality when you connect our bricks with solar cells — this could take 50 bricks in close proximity to the load. These 50 bricks would enable powering emergency lighting for five hours.”

The red pigment of Iron oxide or rust already present in the bricks is essential in the above-mentioned polymerization reaction. This process converts ordinary bricks into supercapacitors — giving them the ability to store larger amounts of energy that can be charged and discharged more quickly than batteries. This simple process apparently can be performed on brand new bricks or to recycle old ones.
In the trial, the researchers were able to charge a piece of brick to 3 volts in 10 seconds, subsequently lighting up a green LED for 10 minutes. The team also proposes that walls made of these energy-storing bricks could store a substantial amount of energy. Acting as a supercapacitor, these bricks could be recharged hundreds of thousands of times every hour.
They were also able to show the utility of these smart bricks underwater. Chemists working on the project intend to not only scale up the process but also hook up these smart bricks to renewable sources like solar cells, to run an array of microelectronic sensors and lights.
