Imaging devices in the healthcare sector have played a pivotal role in the diagnosis and the eventual treatment of different conditions, but this recent innovation is no less than a breakthrough one. Researchers from the University of Adelaide (Australia) and the University of Stuttgart (Germany) have developed the world’s smallest imaging device — measuring in at the thickness of a human hair.
Despite the recent advances by which high-end resolution endoscopes have become an indispensable clinical tool, there is still a need for miniaturized high-resolution probes that could provide high-resolution images in addition to depth of focus — eventually proving extremely useful in the prevention and treatment of various medical conditions.
This camera-like imaging device proved its usefulness in trials traveling down the blood vessels of mice — offering unprecedented abilities to 3D-scan the body at microscopic resolutions. The revolutionary device would help the doctors specifically in better understanding the causes of heart attack and heart disease progression.

“Until now, we couldn’t make high-quality endoscopes this small. Using 3D micro-printing, we are able to print complicated lenses that are too small to see with the naked eye. The entire endoscope, with a protective plastic casing, is less than half a millimeter across. ”

Current fabrication techniques used to develop limit the imaging performance of highly miniaturized probes, thus limiting their widespread application. For this miniature probe, the researchers utilized a novel technique of 3D microprinting to reliably create side-facing freeform micro-optics (<130 µm diameter) on single-mode fibers.

The end result was a fully functional ultrathin aberration-corrected optical coherence tomography probe — the smallest freeform 3D imaging probe yet with a diameter of 0.457 mm (0.02 in). The capabilities of the device were tested in the trials conducted by imaging atherosclerotic human and mouse arteries.
An optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanner was connected to the optical fiber. OCT is basically a 3D depth-sensitive scanning technology, commonly used to map the retina in optometry and ophthalmology. The technology uses near-infrared light to penetrate into tissue — measuring the wave interference between a reference beam and a probe beam to build up live 3D images that can look through surfaces within the body into the structures beneath at microscopic resolutions.
Most important of all, the OCT scanning device can be pushed through blood vessels in the body. The ultra-thin nature & flexibility of the probe let it build up a 3D map of its surroundings to a depth around half a millimeter below the surface. The team believes the new device can not only offer high-resolution images at the cellular level but also allow the scanner to image depths five times deeper than previous attempts.
