Just over three years ago, I bought my newest professional work machine: a sweet, shiny stainless steel HP Spectre laptop. I dreamed it would make me the most productive damn freelance writer in the business. It was a convertible laptop, which meant I could easily flip the screen around and turn it into a tablet. I envisioned doing all sorts of kick-ass presentations to potential clients, standing before them in their shiny polished wood board rooms and knocking their socks off with this amazing crystal-clear display.

The reality was that I sat alone in a makeshift office in the corner of my apartment, typing out blog posts and marketing copy for clients I almost never met in person. I never got to do a sweet presentation to anyone but myself. (The PowerPoint slides looked awesome, too. Natch.)

Natch。)

That’s part of the reason why I’m planning to downgrade to a lower-cost laptop or netbook, or shift to a tablet with a longer service life.

Another reason for my decision is that replacement parts for the Spectre stopped being readily available within a year of my purchase. This was rather dismaying when, after leaving my charging cable behind in a hotel room in Ireland, I could not find the original part on HP’s site. It had already been discontinued alongside the entire Spectre line. I spent the trip home ticking out emails to clients on my smartphone and getting no real work done. And then I waited another week for a replacement charger from an Amazon seller, crossing my fingers that it would be compatible.

When I chose the Spectre, it met what I thought were important specs for my business. It was ultra lightweight, so it wouldn’t feel like anything in my bag. It looked really sleek. Its bundled software was the latest and greatest for productivity, and it converted to a tablet. I thought the tablet would be perfect for reading Kindle books, and it would have enough computing power to play games when I wasn’t working.

Those dreams were dashed, and quickly. Microsoft didn’t support the Kindle app on its Windows 10 operating system. The tablet mode was too ungainly for casual use. And even with a (pseudo) quad-processor setup, the laptop couldn’t run the graphics-intensive games on my Steam account.

(Purpose-built performance is a must)

Tucked away on my office bookshelf is a little Asus netbook that I bought back in 2009. It is the greatest machine I have ever had the pleasure to work with. It started fast and never crashed. Losing the charging cable (which happened almost immediately) wasn’t an issue because I could easily swap in another charger of the same amperage. I was able to double the onboard RAM by opening a small access panel on the bottom of the netbook (created just for that purpose). The 11-inch screen did a really good job of rendering graphics. The keyboard operated smoothly and the keys never stuck or lost their responsiveness.

For the first year, I used the preinstalled Microsoft XP operating system that it came with. That system was so mismatched to the netbook and ate so many system resources that I removed it and replaced it with Lubuntu.

I still take the Asus out occasionally and noodle around in the operating system. Lubuntu is bare bones, but it was designed by an open-source community essentially to do what you needed to do and nothing more. These days, it’s a little too slow for the online research that I do, but if my shiny laptop ever craps out, that 11 year-old netbook is probably able to pull me through.

Likewise, I’m still using an iPad Mini that I won in a raffle almost seven years ago. For casual use, it’s perfect, even if it’s not the fastest tablet around. I paired it with a Bluetooth keyboard back in the day and used it on the road to transcribe interviews and write news stories without having to boot up the giant laptop my publication issued to me.

I still use it regularly, even though it doesn’t run newer apps and will no longer automatically upgrade.

Contrast these two devices with the Spectre. This lovely, lightweight piece of chrome is mostly a paperweight. It’s much faster at browsing the internet and watching Dr. Pimple Popper than the other two, but writing and research are basically the only other things I do with it. I can do all of this on a less costly netbook or Chromebook, or I can shell out the money for an iPad that will offer plenty of additional apps. A lower-cost netbook is much less painful to replace. And I’ll probably still be able to use the iPad seven years from now.

Regardless of what I choose, my next device for business will have significantly fewer bells and whistles than that pretty little Spectre.

(Avoid the glitter)

For those who are just starting out in freelance writing and want to purchase a new laptop just for business use, consider the price point. If you’re just doing writing, not graphics rendering or other processor-grinding work, then all you need is a machine that is tailored for typing or voice entry, and just fast enough to do the online research that you’ll need.

This makes your entry point for an input device much lower. Below $800. Maybe even below $200. That’s important for a sole proprietor.

Don’t go for the bells and whistles even if you think that will make you look more professional. No one can see what laptop you’re using, especially right now. And most clients — scratch that, all clients — don’t really care what you use, as long as you get the job done on time.

In fact, a majority of my small business clients share and create documents with me using Google Docs. That’s free software which is accessible to anyone using a computer.

I’m disappointed that I invested in a subscription to Microsoft Office 365. I thought that it was essential for me to look like a professional. But I don’t use its features enough to justify the annual subscription.

That’s another reason why I will be ditching my laptop, my Microsoft subscription, and anything else that I haven’t really used at all.

Take stock of your business equipment from time to time. At the beginning it may seem that you need a top-of-the-line computer, expensive software, and anything else that you think your clients will require you to use. If, after working with a few clients, you find that is not the case, cut that thread. You can always sign back on to a Microsoft 365 subscription if you get a client who requires it — and pays enough to justify the cost.

If you’re in the process of starting or ramping up your freelance writing, and are considering a new laptop as your companion on this business journey, don’t be afraid to walk away from the most expensive, shiniest new models. Go with what’s going to get the job done for you, and bank the rest of that money.
