I have interviewed thousands of people over my career. I have also set up thousands of interviews. When you work in consulting, interviews happen on a regular basis. Interviews are like breathing in consulting — they happen all the time without much thought. We interview lots of candidates and then we send many of them out to interview with our clients.

You can find lots of tips out there about how to prep for an interview, and I don’t want to take away from any of that — most of it is good. My advice today is about the actual interview itself — when you are in that room. Here are three very practical things that you can do during the interview to increase your odds of getting the job.

Believe it or not, you’re probably not interviewing for the job you think you are. So you need someone in the room to describe it to you. Don’t underestimate this — it’s the biggest mistake people make during an interview.

Generally, good candidates prep for their interviews by getting an understanding of the job description. You may also have spoken with the recruiter or sales rep and they have given you some “insight.” Don’t assume that they have all the facts. Don’t assume that the job description you read online is totally accurate. And don’t assume that the person who phone interviewed you is working from the same script as the people who will be interviewing you face to face.

It’s helpful to understand how organizations work. For example, it’s not uncommon that the person who is interviewing you did not write that job description you have become intimately familiar with. That job description could have come from anywhere: HR, a template in Sharepoint, or, most likely, a colleague who has a slightly different opinion about what the job entails.

It’s also likely that when multiple people are involved in the interview, each of them has a slightly (drastically) different opinion on what is needed for the role. Don’t underestimate how much these differences of opinions matter during the interview. Even emphasizing one seemingly small detail over another can have a big impact in the minds of those conducting the interview.

Of course, you need to be savvy when doing this, but early on you should find a way to have someone articulate the job. Obviously, you can’t come into an interview and blurt out, “What’s the job?” That would make it look like you aren’t prepared. But you can find a way to have your interviewer(s) tell you.

Here’s one that works most of the time, “I read through the job description. I would love to hear about this role from your perspective (or in your words).” People like to talk about things with which they are comfortable. So get them talking about the job. Write down keywords in the language they use (engineering vs. programming; clients vs. customers; revenue vs. sales), recalibrate your lexicon, and be sure to parrot those same words later in the interview.

If there is more than one interviewer in the room, you may even notice some of the team dynamics. For example, you may see one person take the lead on defining the role before another interviewer makes a point to articulate some things that were not said. Regardless of whether these two people are on the same page or not, at least you know what’s important to each.

Some interviewers like to ask questions for the purpose of challenging the interviewee or demonstrating how smart they are (or some of both). The more “technical” the role, the more likely you will have some of these types of questions.

The safest thing to do in these situations is to be honest — with an out. Use this statement to get out of these situations: “I don’t know, but if I had to guess…” and then give your answer.

“I don’t know” is a response heard less and less in interviews for various reasons. But most employers value honesty. And “I don’t know” is a refreshing response.

But don’t forget, you have an out. When you say “I don’t know” and then “guess” at the answer, you have maybe a 50% chance of getting it correct. This can only work in your favor.

Look at the two outcomes from the perspective of the interviewer. The candidate just said “I don’t know” and then answered it wrong — oh well, they said they didn’t know. Or, the candidate just said “I don’t know” and then answered it correctly — impressive!

Before you go, you should ask something like: “Is there any reason you believe I would not be a good fit for this job?”

This is one of my favorite tips for people during an interview. Again, it helps to think about it from the interviewer’s perspective:

You have just spent 45 minutes with the candidate in front of you and you like them. But something they said earlier is nagging at you. You asked the candidate if they worked better in a team environment or individually. The candidate talked about team, team, team. Unfortunately, this job is fairly isolated. So now you are thinking that the candidate won’t work well for this particular role, even though they fit in every other way.

As you are wrapping things up the candidate asks, “Is there any reason you believe I would not be a good fit for this job?”

You see how this question could be crucial for the interview? Interviewers get hung up on stupid things all the time. I mean, when could it be a bad thing to talk about what a team player you are, right? You would be surprised…

In the same way that the defense has the opportunity to speak last in the courtroom, you want the chance to defend your interview. So ask the question and see if you can get them to tell you what’s bothering them. It could be the best move you make in the interview process.
