1 先行词是哪个？

今天我看到一个句子：That sex ratio will be favored which maximizes the number of descendants an individual will have and hence the number of gene copies transmitted.

本学渣一直以为定语从句只能修饰唯一在其前面的名词（即先行词是which/that前面的哪个名词），所以认为 an individual will have 是修饰 descendants的，但是我看到翻译是这样的：那种性别比例能在最大程度上增加一个个体所能拥有的后代数量，并因此能在最大程度上增加所传递到后代身上去的基因复制品的数量。翻译认为定从 an individual will have 应该是修饰 the number of descendants，简而言之，认为 number 才是定从修饰的先行词。

所以我认为先行词不一定就在从句的正前面，尤其是 A of B which/that … 这样的结构，which 引导的从句很可能是修饰名词A而不是B。
