Design your life so it works for you.

Health, work, play, love

We've now arrived at chapter four in this guide and we're gonna continue with our time audit. This final chapter will encourage you to look at how much time you're currently giving to four different aspects of your life, health, work, play and love. And the question is, how do these aspects in turn show up in your daily routines? "Designing your life" is written by Bill burnett and Dave Evans, and the idea in the book is again simple but powerful. You can design your life to work for you. So let's imagine for a second, have you ever sat in a beautifully designed chair or an exquisitely well made sports car? Maybe you stopped and marveled at the design of your smartphone, and if so, you've experienced the bliss of quality design.

I want to imagine you could take your life, tinker with it, fine tune it until it was perfectly designed. So just as designers solve everyday problems by creating new things, you can also try to address the problems in your life. By focusing on its design. We're gonna listen to one chapter from the blink "designing your life". And remember, if these ideas resonate, can always find and listen to that full blink at the bottom of this guide whenever you want to. For now, let's just listen if you're trying.

Excerpt from Designing Your Life

If you're trying to get directions from Google maps, you need to know more than just the destination. You also need to know your current location. The same is true when you start designing your life. The first step to figuring out your current situation is to assess four critical areas in your life, health, work, play, and love. Health includes your emotional, mental and physical health. Work includes both paid and volunteer jobs. Play any activity done simply for the fun of it, and love applies to partners, children, friends and pets. The goal is to find a healthy balance among all four of these areas, and the precise balance is totally up to you. Someone young will likely give more importance to play. While an elderly person might focus more on health.

After you've taken stock of these areas, it should become apparent to you if one is being neglected. For example, maybe you're too focused on work and it has caused both your health and your love life to suffer. Or maybe you've been too immersed in play and have neglected your career aspirations.  Log the times and activities that keep you engaged, energetic, or in a state of flow.

With your compass in proper working order, let's take a closer look at engagement. To live a joyful life, it's important to know what engages and disengages you. And for this, a good time journal can be an invaluable tool. This is a place to write down your experiences in both good times and bad, and doing so will help you understand what brings Joy to your life.

Throughout each day, wherever you are, write down how engaged and focused you feel, also noting if you're unhappy or bored. Also, jot down what you were doing at the time. One thing to make special note of is when you experience flow, where you become completely immersed in an activity and time seems to fly by. Maybe it happens when you're researching a legal document or when you're chopping carrots. Maybe you feel it when you play sports, it depends on you. If you ever emerge from being in the zone and are surprised by how much time has passed, be sure to make note of what you were doing. These moments are a great indicator of your engagement, and you should keep them in mind when designing both your career and your life.

Another clue to help you find your way in life are your energy levels. Every day involves both physical and mental work, but some activities take a bigger toll than others. Use your good time journal to keep track of which activities drain your energy and which ones help to sustain it. If you feel completely drained after sitting in meetings or doing data entry, but feel energized after pitching products to a potential customer, make a note of it. Understanding how to stay energized and make the most of your day will be useful.

Discover your flow

So alongside bullet journaling, keeping note of your energy levels and when you experience moments of flow or disengagement is a really helpful tool in figuring out what you want your daily routine to prioritize.

Might also want to try an exercise called mind mapping. Point of mind mapping is to help you get out of routines that are causing you to feel stuck. And one point or another, we all experience these moments of stuckness. Perhaps you're stuck in a job you don't care about, or there are things going on at home that are just not working for you. The idea of mind mapping to give yourself time and space to reengage with what excites and animates you. The concept of the exercise is to take a pen and some paper and write down anything you enjoy doing.

Begin to free associate, jot down whatever pops into your mind, like hiking, surfing, travel. After you've done this for five minutes, go back to each of your words and begin to make secondary associations. So next to hiking, for example, might write down mountains or exploring. The idea of this exercise is to uncover your wants and dreams and then to get more specific around them. And the next step is putting your ideas together into a plan. You're happy in your job but feeling restless? Maybe just need a holiday, in which case block off time in your calendar to get organizing. You like your work, but you feel far away from nature. Maybe it's time to explore relocation. That a conversation you can have with your boss or your partner, your family.

That's how mind mapping works. It allows you to open your mind to new ideas and new connections you might otherwise overlook. So just a pen and paper, you can begin to connect those dots between your dreams and pave that way to happier, healthier routines.

Recap of Chapter 4

Designing Your Life

• You can design your life to work for you.

To figure out where you want to go, you first need to know where you are. Start by assessing your:

Health: emotional, mental, and physical health. Work: both paid and volunteer jobs. Play: any activity done simply for the fun of it. Love: partners, children, friends, and pets.

Take stock so you can strike a good balance between these vital aspects of your life.

• A time journal is a great tool to figure out what engages and disengages you.

How does it work?

Write down your experiences in both good and bad times. Take a note of what you’re doing and how you feel– are you engaged/focused/unhappy/bored?

Make special note of when you experience flow–when you’re immersed in an activity and time flies–and which activities drain or sustain your energy levels.

• Try mind-mapping to re-engage with what excites and animates you.

For five minutes, write down anything and everything you enjoy doing (ie ‘hiking’)

Go back to each of those and free-associate related words (like ‘mountains,’ ‘exploring,’ or ‘exercise.’)

You can then use this information to plan your next steps, whether it’s making time to plan a holiday, see friends, or negotiating a relocation to somewhere closer to nature.
