英语写作中“最后”finally、eventually、in the end、at last的用法

一、finally 是最通用的单词，它可以表示所有中文里“最后”的意思，例如：

First do Task 1. Then do Task 2. Finally do Task 3.（首先做任务1，再做任务2，最后做任务3。）

上面是描述一个协议的一般形式。

We proposed an e-commerce protocol, proved its correctness, implemented it in Java, tested and finally accomplished  an e-commerce app.（我们提出了一个电商协议，证明了其正确性，用Java实现、测试，最后实现了一个电商app。）

上面这个例句尽管乏味，但体现了在描述一串事件时使用finally。

A user registers an account in the cloud.    He/She agrees on a key with the cloud server. He/She pays for data outsourcing. Finally he/she can securely outsource his/her data to the cloud. （用户在云上注册一个账号，与云服务器协商一个密钥，支付数据托管费用，最后他就可以安全地在云上托管数据了。）

He solved the major problem finally, but some minor problems remained. （他最后解决了主要问题，但留下了一些次要问题。）

He thought about it for a couple of days. Finally he decided to go studying abroad. （他想了好几天，最后决定出去留学。）

Finally, we will come to a conclusion.（最后，我们给出结论。）

二、上面四个例句反映了四个类型：（1）第一个例句是任务清单；（2）第二三四个例句是描述一串事件；（3）第五个例句是描述思考与决定；（4）第六个例句是口头或书面表达的过程。

第一类型只能用finally，第二类可以用eventually 、in the end替代，第三、四类只能用in the end代替。

三、at last 强调经过（艰苦）努力后的结果，例如：

He endeavored to study CNN and at last won the competition in 2012. （他努力研究CNN，最后在1012赢得了比赛。）

这个句子中的at last 可以用finally 、eventually 、in the end 替代。

四、finally、eventually 和in the end在论文写作常用，但由于at last带有明显的强调语气，所以在论文写作一般不用。

补充一点，at the end不要和in the end混淆，at the end 是一个确定时段和空间的端点，例如

At the end of the year, we managed to finish it.（到年底，我们完成了。）

She stood at the end of the line.（她站在队尾。）
