英语写作中“详述”expand on/upon的用法

“详述”的简单表达是explain ……in detail 或describe……in detail等。

expand on/upon是“详述”的另一表达，在需要丰富表达方式时可以替代explain ……in detail 和describe ……in detail ，例如：

The authors need to explain their idea in detail.（作者需要详细解释他们的想法。）可以替代为：
The authors need to expand on their idea.

又例如：

Above is the overview of the program. Below we will describe it in detail.（上面是计划的概要。下面我们将详述这个计划。）可以替代为：

Above is the overview of the program. Below we will expand upon it.

注意，expand on/upon 与explain ……in detail 、describe……in detail 也不是完全同义，区别在于：expand on/upon有比较，它的严格含义其实是explain ……in more detail 、describe ……in more detail。下面的表达是不妥的，因为没有比较：

In the following, we will expand on the proposed protocol. （下面我们将详述所提出的协议。）

这里应该用describe ……in detail ：

In the following, we will describe the proposed protocol in detail.
