There are many similarities between the Mid Autumn Festival and the American Thanksgiving because they are meant for families spending time together and eating. However, there are some differences.

This year, the Mid Autumn Festival falls on Wednesday, October 4th, and the day of the week changes every year. This is because the date follows the lunar calendar. American Thanksgiving this year is Thursday, the 23rd of November, so it’s a little later. Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.

今年的中秋节恰逢国庆期间，是10月4日，并且中秋节的阳历日子每年都会变。这是因为这是一个阴历的节日。美国的感恩节则是星期四，11月23日，有些晚。感恩节一般是在11月的第四个星期四。

This lesson talked about the history and purpose of the Mid Autumn Festival. Thanksgiving in the US is for the members of your family to gather together and be thankful for the things in their life - for the harvest (in the old days, for most), for your parents, for your jobs, health, for basically anything. It’s supposed to be a time of joy for people to get together. The “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World.

What do Americans eat? The star of the show is the turkey. Mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet corn, various fall vegetables, squash, and pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner. All of these are actually native to the Americas or were introduced as a new food source to the Europeans when they arrived.
