Wooden tools were eclipsed by harder and more durable metal implements long ago. But metals are not renewable; scientists are on the hunt for something that is. Teng Li, a researcher at the University of Maryland, wondered whether wood could be made strong enough to provide the solution. His recent report in Matter suggests that it can.

Mr Li used chemicals to remove a portion of wood’s structural compounds and compacted the remaining components, before heating, drying and oiling the residue. The end result was a material twice as hard as aluminium and nearly as hard as copper. It can be honed: when examined under a microscope, knives made from the treated timber were three times sharper than those made from steel. Given that such blades are light, renewable and rustproof, wood may well be set for a comeback.

为了解决开发潜在低成本、可持续硬质材料的挑战，马里兰大学李腾教授课题组展示了一种简单有效的方法来将大块天然木材加工成硬化木材。

上图显示了将原始天然木材转化为硬化木材的加工过程。

1. 对木材进行化学处理并挤压，使木材的材料结构急剧致密化，形成硬化木材。

2. 将硬化木材浸泡在食品级矿物油中进行表面处理，以增加其防水性。

与天然木材相比，硬化木材的硬度增加了23倍。与此同时，硬化木材还展现出丰富的潜在应用，研究人员将硬化木材进一步加工为餐刀，其锋利度几乎是商用餐刀（例如，由钢、塑料和天然木材制成的餐刀）的3倍。

此外，硬化木材钉可以达到与钢钉相当的性能，并且可以轻松地将其打入天然木板并将它们固定在一起。这些丰富的应用表明硬化木材有望成为传统硬质材料的可再生和低成本替代品，并且具有使用硬化木材的额外优势。
