Seeing these work-from-home photos in articles and across social media is almost therapeutic during these scary and uncertain times. Unless you are an information security professional. Then, these pictures keep you up at night.

Yesterday, The Denver Post (unknowingly) highlighted this security threat in a compilation article of work-from-home pet co-workers photos submitted by subscribers. When reviewing, I noticed the following security risks captured in the photos:

This data may be classified as confidential or sensitive. It may be protected by contracts with third parties or even data privacy laws. Sharing photos that capture this data is the equivalent of emailing it directly to an unauthorized party. You are putting yourself at risk of being terminated for violating your confidentiality agreement or corporate policies.

I selfishly want to continue seeing your cat sitting on your keyboard. Moving forward, please consider the following tips before taking or sharing your work-from-home photos.

1. Obscure your computer screen or put it to sleep. Your lock screen may have your name or username and shouldn’t be shown.

2. Don’t include your kid or pet’s name in a public post if you use it in your password.
